well today i was plesantly surprised, when a security guard from the ORACLE shopping centre in Reading walked up to me and said "have you got a permit to take photos today" i said i did,nt think you needed one as i was out side the shops . he pointed out that the riverside going through town is part of the shopping centre grounds. i apologised and showed him a few of my shots and he said wow they are really good  just politely asked me not to take any more photos and have a nice day. yes i acually met a nice security man. well done to reading oracle for taking the right approach.

It was his day for the valium obviously:)

Its nice that the guy was pleasant to you, but not really a suprise, most people are reasonable and understanding, all this jumpy paranoia people talk about isnt really as common as it might seem.

Glad he liked your pictures though, its always nice to get a compliment:thumbs:

hi ade, yeah i hear what your saying but you hear so many horror stories the first thing that goes through your mind when a guy approaches you is "here we go" so it was nice to not be just another statistic.

In no offence to your comment but with regards to it.

I like how people paint the picture that security personal are portrayed to others as being the nasty unknowing person thats on a power trip without the powers of a failed police officer.

Psii- i know you didnt say that but not all security guards need to take valium.

I do this job also, I dont give marching orders till it is needed in the correct situation.

photographers have bad press too you know, and just think how sick we all are of it.

I'd kinda like to call ******** on this one because it just feels kinda wrong to be warned off taking pics in a wide open, outside, and very public area.
However, there are circumstances where that may be appropriate like music concerts or whatever.
I don't feel that stopping peeps taking pictures at the Oracle is appropriate, I wonder what the procedure is for prohibiting photography from a dinghy floating down the river.
I wouldn't care how polite they were just as long as they do actually have the right to obstruct because half the time the guards do as their employer tells them in the misguided belief that they actually legally can obstruct.
I mean they want you to walk through the place with your eyes OPEN, so what is this permit for pictures/inside shopping centre grounds crap, apart from.............crap

the shopping centre has very clear signs up saying "no photography", as i was outside the building i thought it did not apply but, as the guard said, i was still on private property. and i acknowledged that and moved on. basicly no drama i,m sure if my attitude had been different there could have been another outcome, its a two way street in my opinion

I get it alot, people telling me im a failed police officer, a half with, im a no body, a police officer wanna be, power hungry monsters, puffy chested morons, this is a few of the names.

Either way, its not an excuse to have a dig at people on here for it, i know as much as anyone else there are some real knobs when it comes to security. Im usually the one to re-train them on public relations.

i get what your saying kris, as i said it was a nice surprise to speak to someone with a bit of common sense and politeness.

If you're only a half with no body they must be recruiting very small personnel nowadays :D Joke! :)
