With the new announcement that Canon are to be releasing a new body in their 1D series, the 1DX, what does this mean for any update to the 5D mkII?

I've currently sold a 1D mkIII to move to a smaller lighter full frame body, and I am waiting to sell my other 1DmkIII but only want to do so when the 5DmkIII is available.

I'm so impatient I want it now :D

Me too, the 1DX is so far out of my price range its not funny, but who knows in two years perhaps the 5DIII

There is supposed to be another announcement in November though so fingers crossed.

Thats what i'm thinking. I'm half tempted to buy a 5DII as the prices are fantastic but its a 3 year old camera now and don't want to jump in and get one if a new one is round the corner.

But if this new 1DX is coming out in March I cant see a new 5D coming out pretty soon as it'll surely have more MP then the 1DX and you know what the majority of consumers are like, MP count rules.

I just wanted a 5D with the AF of the 7D and i'd be happy but looks like a wait is on the cards

Yes it is but I'm after the smaller body of the 5D. I love my current 1D mkIII but the weight gets too much for family outings.

Not to mention the 1DS is currently way out of my price range :)

Be nice if they put the new 1D X sensor into a new 5D body for better high end Iso performance and "lost" a few MP into the bargain, they did that in the G upgrade, threw in a better AF so it performed better in low light (for some - mine seems to perform ok for what I want) and finally a tailorable auto Iso. Other than that I think the current model is just fine, oh and dump Video.
I'm guessing that aint going to happen though.

I think that if the price is right and you want a 5D2 now, go for it. Doesn't matter how good the 5D3 might be, 5D2 is still a fantastic camera.

Even if the replacement is announced today, it'll be a year before you get one a sensible price, and that will be a lot more than a 5D2.

I'm guessing that the pixels race is not over yet and the 5D3 will have the 7D's AF and perhaps 30mp, running maybe 5-6fps. New 1Dx is capped at 18mp because it can't dump any more data and run at 12fps, and the noise advanatge of those bigger pixels is almost a side benefit.

Something along those lines would fit well with the 1Dx and continue Canon's philosophy of dual pro-spec lines of speed vs resolution. Which makes a lot of sense to me.

Yeah you may be right there. Are you happy with the AF performance on your 5D2?

Yeah, and I might be wrong too LOL

I have no problem with 5D2's AF. There's certainly nothing wrong with it as such and it's on a par with the xxD cameras that nobody seems to complain about. It's just that, compared to the 7D, that camera is really good for action stuff.

I notice Tim D's reply on your other thread re 5D2's AF. Tim really knows what he's talking about and either owns or has owned a lot of high end Canons and has shot them side by side to see how they shape up. Not many people have done that, including me ;)

I would just say, there is always a new camera around the corner but the only one worth a jot is the one you've got in your hand here and now. Rather more important than a particular new camera is the format. If you want to go FF, and it looks like Canon has just decided that for you ;) then get stuck in to a 5D2. If you buy right, you can always sell on a camera like that if it's not been abused and in the overall scheme of things you'll not lose much at all. Low risk option.

Edit: don't expect it to feel or perform like your 1D3 though. Very different animal. It has better IQ, and that's it.

I was wondering why you let the MKiii go Phil,,,, I thought you were looking for a Mkiv ..especially with the agency work...How's it going by the way ?
 
Phil, the AF is okay if you use the center cross point, but the outer points are worse than the 50D and virtually useless in low light as they hunt like crazy.
 
The 5D3 will be more defined by marketing and segmentation than technical constraints. With the 1Dx taking over the top end, the 5D3 will need to be significantly worse on a number of fronts to be made available at a reasonable cost.

Since rumor starting is a game everyone plays now, my guess is that the 5D3 will have:
- around 24-30Mpx, though the 18Mpx sensor from 1Dx is a possibility
- Same high ISO performance as 1Dx possibly without the H2 extension or if higher Mpx sensor is used, 1 stop worse high ISO (still one stop better than 5D2)
- Much lower fps, probably 4fps to carve out a niche for 8fps 7D2 cropper
- 1 or 2 DIGIC Vs (not V+) and no dedicated AF/metering Digic like 1Dx
- AF will be 7D level for low light accuracy and it will also appear in 70D, AF points will cover a a smaller area of the full frame than 1Dx
- Weather sealing will suck, max 7D level
- Naturally only 1x CF card

I would take a 5D2 with the 1Dx sensor and a more sensitive 19-point AF including spot AF. I would run right now and buy one for 3000 euros if it was available ;)

Hi mate to be honest i've had a massive change of heart.

I've sold my 300 2.8 and a mkIII to free up some cash as i've decided the agency work isn't going to make enough for me to justify all the money I have tied up in camera gear. Add to that the cost of travel, parking, camera insurance etc i feel i'm better suited to local stuff and also weddings.

Hence the reason for a 5D2 and keeping a 1D mkIII.

If I was a little younger an not saving for a house I think I may have persisted more with the sports stuff, but i've had a look at the broader picture and worked out my priorities :thumbs:

You and me both mate. :shrug: It's an improved weather sealing, AF system that I'm after mainly. An improvement in ergonomics would be nice also.

1DX too pricey and probably not aimed at the mass prosumer market, as the 5D2 is and hopefully the Mk3. Thus a hope for a release in 2012.

Well I wish you luck with wherever you find yourself....I always looked forward to seeing the Farsley pics each week...

I'm going to give it one more season and see where things end up....I may even take a Part-time job to take the pressure off the photography....

And I miss doing the Farsley stuff but I could justify doing it knowing it was leading to agency work. But now I dont think I could carry on doing it for free and not leading anywhere.:shake:

Good luck with the photography mate. I'm gonna try and get more wedding work as the wedding I did the other month has shown that its not as scary as I thought it would be :thumbs:
