What am I doing wrong? Am I being stupid?

When my 40D is in Av mode, no matter what I set the aperture at, it underexposes by 2 stops, even when I set the Exposure Compensation, when I depress the shutter button halfway to focus, it always reads -2.

It works fine in manual and in the automatic settings.

I can't think of anything I've done to cause this. It's probably something really basic, but it's got me stumped just now!

hold the AV+/- button and roll the wheel two clicks the the right...

You dont need to hold that button on the 40D

How have you been changing the exposure compensation? because it sounds like that to be honest...

...make sure the power switch on the back is on the top line, not the middle. Then half press the shutter, when it says -2 turn the big wheel on the back clock wise until it moves off -2 and back to the middle.

If it isnt that them I am stumped

I'm doing that, the same button that is used to change the ISO. When I press it, it's set to 0 but when I press the shutter button it reverts to -2.

That is flash compensation - ignore that button in the 40D (unless using the flash)

Thanks very much mate, that's what it was. I never changed it, not on purpose anyway!

Normal service is resumed!

Make sure the power button on the rear of the camera is against the white line, one click up from on. Then press the exposure button to half pressure ( so it takes an exposure reading,) then use the control dial to adjust the exposure comp back to neutral.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Much appreciated.

Reminds me of my first day at Lake Como in Italy.
With being a glasses wearer I find it difficult to see the settings through the viewfinder, and didn,t notice I was overexposing by 2 stops,
Didn,t chimp till I sat at a Café for a brew and I had mucked up 20 shots.:shake:

Chimp a lot now, hey, thats a good name " chimpalot" .

Dave, glad you worked it out, with a little help. I was suffering the same problem, but only -1/3 until I had a chat with an helpful tog.
