What are these dots?

I have a D80 which I bought 2nd Hand.

I was trying some settings out and took some photos of the sky. After looking at them in LR the last 2 had these dots on them?

This picture is clipped to just have the area of dots but they are in a fairly concentric circle right in the middle of the frame.

The first 3 shots dont have them.

The only difference between the two with the dots are that they were taken at f22 (ISO 100, 1/800 and 1/1000) and the others were taken at f10 (ISO 100, 1/100).

Is this a fault with the camera or lens? Is it dirt? Is it a setting? :thinking:
 
That is usually dust on the sensor (f22 bringing more in to focus than f10 thus them showing up) looking at how many are on there and the also pattern effect I would guess maybe some sort of fungus or something funky! dust tends to look like the two bigger blogs at the top.

That is, without doubt, the most magnificent collection of dust bunnies I've ever seen.

I've had the camera about 2 weeks so I dont think it's all my fault!
 
Those small dots don't look so much like dust as small drops or something.. I hope the previous owner hasn't done a hack job of cleaning the sensor with some kind of spray that has gotten to a coating? :thinking:
 
Definitely not your average dust bunnies. Unless your sensor has chicken pox or something I think it'll need a good clean at best and a pro clean at worst. Never seen anything like it but to get this many this size does look like maybe it's been cleaned with a air spray and thrown some propellant at it. Would like to know how you get it fixed and what it is.
 
It's in the camera shop now. He tried a quick clean but when I got back he said hell need more time and to come back tomorrow.

I'll keep you updated.

its a strange one :shrug: could be as I suggested lubricant or as Tom said fungi Im really not sure but it is the best since Janice's sensor clean (only us long time members will get that i doubt I could find the thread though) Ive ever seen
 
Must admit never seen a sensor like that before,and as I said I did sneeze over one mine once,their seem a patten to it,good luck with the cleaning :)
 
Ben - the three big OOF blobs in a horizontal line around a 1/5th of the way down the frame are on the sensor but I'd say all the others are something else. They're small, sharp and evenly spread - they look like a lens problem to me. Have you checked the lens?
 
UPDATE

Th camera shop has confirmed that the lens is fine and that it is something on the sensor.

He is going to send it away to get it looked at on Monday.

He has offered me either a full refund OR I can wait to see if it can be sorted OR he has a D200 that I can take but it's about £100 more expensive.

I've borrowed the d200 to play with until Monday.

Is the D200 worth the extra if the d80 is knacked?
 
that really is an amazing array of something on the sensor! even a sneeze wouldn't be that perfect :-P

be interestedt o see how it comes back after a clean, if you opt to go that way.
 
I've been playing with the D200 and I dont see any significant performance over the D80. For the photography I do, almost anything except sports and wildlife, I dont think the extra money is worth it for me. Although I like the feel of it with the rubber grips and the heavier body.

The shop I go to isn't the cheapest either but it has great customer service and I get loads of discount. However, I think the tag on the D200 was £550! I dont know what lens it is normally sold with at the shop but that seems a bit steep to me. I expect they would just bundle in the 18-135 I got with the D80.

I can get a brand new body only D90 for that online and use the prime f2.8 50mm I have. That would get me a gen2 camera rather than an old gen1.
 
I'm surprised you don't recommend the d90?
 
Final Update

The repair will take over 2 weeks so I've taken the d200 for an extra £50 and he swapped the 4GB SD card I had for the d80 for a 4GB CF card :)

I can get on with the photography now. I'll let you know what the problem was on the d80 in a couple of weeks time :)
