No
I've been asked by a friend to help him find a DSLR plus a suitable lens or 2 within a budget of £400.

He's happy to buy second hand.
He's not after anything too fancy.
He's not looking to upgrade in the next year or so.
He doesn't have any existing kit so isn't tied to a particular brand.
He won't be borrowing my Nikon gear so I won't necessarily recommend Nikon.

He's primarily buying the DSLR because his son does motorcross racing and he'd like to be able to photograph him doing that. That's not a kind of photography I've tried but I'm guessing something like a 70-300mm lens would be ideal. I know fast glass would great but within his budget he's not going to get any f2.8 lenses.

I've had a look on Ebay and come up with this (LINKY) as a possible that comes well within his budget and looks like it includes everything he'd need. The question is though, is a Sony A100 good enough for motorcross photography. How fast a camera is it?

What other recommendations would people make? Nikon, Canon and Sony would be prefered but I'll consider anything for him if the spec and price is right.

How about a 2nd hand 30D and a 55-250mm. No experience of Sony sorry. HTH

It really is truly amazing what you can get in the DSLR world for £400 nowadays! :D

Erm..if your friend chooses to buy new, the best bit of advice I can offer is to go into a camera shop and try them out. What feels best in the hand?, what feels intuitive to use? What lenses, grips, accessories are available for that camera (thinking further ahead)? Are there any known issues with that particular camera? What is the customer service like of that camera brand?

These are some of the questions I would ask myself when choosing a new camera..

Hope that helps

He'll get something decent and new from Sony in that price range and I'm sure there'll be deals floating around at this time of year on them.

Rather than the 30D, if you do not mind the smaller screen, have a look for a 20D.
The 20D should not be more than £200 so you will have £200 left for lenses.

That could get you an 18-55 as well as a 55-250IS and, maybe a nifty fifty as well if you find a good deal.
