I'm starting from scratch. I know pretty much nothing about photography. Im willing to spend up to 500 quid just now. In the future when i become accostomed to it id maybe spend up to a grand on a camera.

Basically its to get started on my web development projects at www.barrym.net.

I'm goodish with photoshop aswell if that helps any?

I want to shoot mainly cars and infrastructure (colourful buildings etc)

im looking to shoot pictures as good as this.

Im aware that picture is of high quality. How hard is it to produce photos like this and how much money am I talking about?

Iv been informed Nikon is a good make to go with.

My website is at www.barrym.net . I am looking to progress my website development with the purchase of a professional camera.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You don't sound 100% sure this is really the hobby for you and i feel you want to try it out 1st so my suggestion would be to buy a good used DSLR from this forum classifieds section and a decent lens and see how you get on. I would suggest a Canon 450d and a 18-55mm kit lens plus a 50mm f1.8 (or Nikon equivalent). This will get you up and running within your budget and if you want to upgrade you could buy some really decent glass which will make a big difference to your images.

Good luck!

You can produce this image with a relatively cheap SLR on a long exposure.
Grab a 450D, starry lens filter and a Tripod for less than £400 and your sorted.

Not that simple, there's bit more to it than that. Read, listen, learn, practice and then do it all over again. That's part of the fun, the learning by mistakes and you'll make plenty but when you hit that special shot it's a great feeling. So I've been told:shrug:

Yes agree with the above, have a look through the classifieds on here, there are plenty of cameras [and makes] that will do what you achieve. You will need to get out there and try things out, read and listen!

Welcome BTW!

I am thinking about purchasing the Nikon D3000 for 369 pounds from Amazon?

What do you guys think of that camera? Will i be able to produce HDR photos with this camera bearing in mind I am good with photoshop.

You can produce HDR photos with any cam that supports AEB Bracketing or RAW, or if your good at using the curves tool, any camera at all.

I've got the D3000, its a pretty decent camera, happy enough with it for now but no live view or bracketing also have to buy dearer lenses to auto focus.. wish i'd saved a bit longer and got a D90

I've had a play with the D3000 and it'll be more than capable of producing images like that when you have the ability to utilise all it's features...

A good starter camera and I'm happily recommending it to anyone who's starting out...

The D90 is fantastic and one day I will own one :( but priccy.

You could look at the D5000 as it is a "D90" in a smaller body, but it does lack the autofocus motor so it will only auto focus AF-S lenses.

Creating images like the one posted is more to do with your technical ability with the camera and artistic vision to see the shot in the first place than which camera you should use.

In the right hands the D3000 is quite capable of producing those images as are dozens of other makes/models.

Thumbs up to the D5000. I bought it on the basis I will save money on the D90 because the D5000 is the D90 in a smaller body. The D5000 is £479 with cashback so it's affordable and you get a great camera.

I was in your same postion til I walked into Jessops and decided by holding some of the cameras :)

I had a list of camera that I liked, and wouldn't mind owning, but I could only have one.
My choices were, D3000, D5000, 450D, 500D, 1000D.

Although, the specs are simular, all had advanges and disadvanages.

I do inted to go to college to learn more, and progress my new hobby, so opted for more than the D3000, as in my mind, I think I'd out grow it quickly.

So it soon came down to three cameras... D5000, 450D, 500D.

Had a go with all three, even got the opertunity to go into town and take "real-life" photos, and found that the Nikon D5000 felt, and proformed more to my liking that the Canons. I also felt the Canons felt cheaply made (not trying to cause agruments) so settled with the D5000.

Got a cracking deal!

D5000 + 18-55 kit lens
Tamron 70-300 lens
camera + lens bag
8gig Memory card
Card reader
2 UV filters
spare battery
40 free prints for £650.

Worth being cheeky with the manager ;-)
