What Camera System Would YOU Buy?

No
Imagine you know what you know now about cameras but are buying your first camera and lens. You have a couple grand to spend, what would you buy?

I'm asking YOU personally what YOU would buy for your own uses and not looking for recommendations etc.

A friend and I had this discussion yet we couldn't come up with an answer really.

Depends on the cost of the camera and the lens, expensive camera and cheap lens or visa versa. Also if you prefer one make to another for say ease of use, or menu layout. Then there is the type of camera, Impossible to say who prefers what and why, it is an open question

I'm asking you. What would you buy?. I've got cameras and I'm buying more this week so it's not for me haha. Was discussing it with a friend and neither of us could make a decision on what we'd actually buy.

It's like asking what's the best car. It's impossible to recommend anything without knowing the intended use.

I've edited my original post. I'm not asking for me or anything else. I'm specifically asking you what you would buy knowing what you know now about cameras.

For a couple of grand I would get Sony, basically everything I have now.

If I have more money and size doesn't matter then I would get Canon, when they have a 35/1.4 or 1.2 released.

It'd be mirrorless every time for me.

I have a Sony A7 and that's what I'd buy again as it does most of what I need and they're quite cheap now. Lens wise I'd start with the 35mm f2.8. I have one of those too.

Might stretch the 2 grand, but for me, a Nikon Z5 with the 24-70mm f4 would be my foundation for building a system from scratch.

X Pro 3 with the 23mm f/2 and the 35mm f/2. Probably would have to hunt 2nd hand for a bit to get it all for a couple of grand. No other camera system would fall in [price] range sadly.

Thankfully I have all that I want for a similar budget you have specified. :)

Nikon D500
Nikon 16-80mm VR
Nikon 70-300mm VR

May come in about 2k second hand if I needed to replace.

For what I do, city scenes, landscapes, and a bit of sport/fast moving stuff, that does all I want and need. :)

And added when finances refilled the pot, a Sigma 10-20mm. ;)

Now the OP has adjusted the question

I would still buy a Nikon camera. That was my choice after getting a cheap Kodak point and shoot to see what all this digital malarky was about. One thing I would not have done is get the bottom of the range, cost me a fortune in upgrades.

Said it before on here; probs a Sony A7 of some description. Most mature ML system currently available. Although Nikon have made big strides forward in their ML system in just the last few months. So a Z6+ 24-70 couldn't be discounted as an option, cos there's some really, really lovely lenses come out in that system (very happy with my Z6, I have to say). Not Canon; the R is too expensive, and the RP isn't much cop imo. I don't like either of those cams anyway. The Nikon has the best ergonomics/handling ime. But, probs Sony if starting from scratch. Loads more options for lenses, especially s/h.

DSLR? At this point, with the experience I have now, probs not. Bigger, heavier (better handling mind), less versatile (EVF in very low light is an absolute boon, as is eye AF). Plus the few Nikon Z lenses are so far superior to their F-mount counterparts (if much more expensive). Definitely ML over DSLR, if I was going for Nikon.

Oh, and definitely FX. I wouldn't bother with anything smaller.

If I was limited to £2000 I would get a used Leica Q. It has a full frame sensor with fixed 28mm 1.7 lens.

I wish I had a couple of grand for a first lens and camera!

I now, have a small Panasonic GX9 with 15mm f1.7 and 42.5mm f1.7 which is great for most stuff and easy to carry about all in was under 1000£.

If I could I would buy again a Nikon D750 (700£) with sigma 150-600C (600£) and a nikon 20mm f1.8 (350£). Because I love wildlife and northern light and there the GX9 cannot compete. Add to this a nikon 24-120 f4 (350£) and you have an amazing set up for about 2000£.

But because I can only afford one cheaper system it has to be the GX9 for now.

Sony A7III & 24-105 if there were a little flexibility in the budget (I'd probably choose used/grey too).

However I might also consider an Olympus E-M5 II and 12-100 f4 for weight saving & that great IBIS.

£2K? hmmm, can't go with the R6 then? Maybe a Z6 with that tasty 50mm 1.8, or an A7III and the Zeiss 55 1.8 - I'd go used either way to squeeze in a card and whatever little extras I could, spare battery etc

Used Canon R with EF adapter and a used 24-105 F4 L

Slightly biased as I am a Canon user, the Nikon Z series isn't cutting it for me so second choice would be Sony A7.

The deciding factor is the choice of glass available; the EF adapter makes using cheaper, used Canon glass seamless.

X-T? (not ??) and an 18-135 zoom then start saving for the 100-400. MIGHT just about be able to stretch to it all on 2 grand if I was lucky on the 2nd hand market.

I wouldn't change what I have now, which is quite a nice feeling really...

Sony a7RII
Tamron 28-75mm 2.8
Tamron 70-180mm 2.8

Under £3k, so that's a 'couple of grand' right?! Very little I can't shoot with that and it fits in a (relatively) tiny Domke shoulder bag.

If I was starting again with a £2K budget :-
Nikon D750 + 24-120 AF-s f4 Bundle £1600
Godox Flash £150
Ebay - Phot R Tripod/Monopod £50
Argos Lowepro Tahoe BP150 Rucksack £50
Which should leave enough for a 50mm F1.8 prime from a reputable Used specialist

But then again might go for D750 body + 50mm prime and a used Sigma 150-600 with multiplier as I like wildlife as much as motorsport

I spent a couple of grand on a Sony A7ii and a 200-600mm lens.
I would have preferred an A7iii but if I'd bought that I wouldn't have been able to get the lens :p

I would just replace/upgrade what I'm using now - all Nikon FF. I currently use a D810 - would upgrade to a D850.

The lens I'd get for it would be the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 IF-ED VRII.

I've spent more than £2k on airguns this year so I won't be buying anything photographic for a while.....
But, for what I do most of the time, I'd probably stick with a Sony RX10 IV and have a bit of change.

I wouldn't spend that much on a camera knowing what I know now, it won't make me a better photographer. Nikon Z50 for £600

I'd just buy this kit again and have plenty of change from £2000. In fact, I'd have a lot of change from £1000!

I think I've decided but thibk its heavily influenced on a recent spend already haha. I'd buy a Nikon Z6 and 24-70 or I'd buy a Hasselblaad 503CM.

I bought a Z6 the other day.

It’s kind of hard without knowing the budget. I’d probably stick with Nikon DSLRs as I am not a big fan of mirrorless (yet). That said, I’ve always been intrigued by Leica, but have never even touched one, so it’s just a pipe dream. Lately I’m in love with my D780 and Nikkor 35mm f/2D. But that’s just me.

I'd buy the same one that friends have so I can "borrow" their lens's!

X-T4 + 50mm-140mm,which i have along with other lenses,love this camera. :) :fuji:

X100V & the wcl/tcl.

Love mine more than any other cameras I've owned. Always happy to take it out, weighs nothing and most importantly gets used. Prefer it over my xt4, in fact I'd happily sell my t4 for another x100v.

£2000 bought my V,F and converter lenses and I had change.

I think this is a good suggestion - the Z50 should be enough camera for any enthusiast - limited by the lack of lenses
