hi guys and girls.

i am hoping to purchase a new dslr in the next week or so. advice on which to go for! canon or nikon? i have £1000 to spend. am lookin at d90 but not sure as i have been used to canon...... semi pro stuff would be great but intermediate stuff is fine also . all advice appreciated.....if this looks odd its because i have been swotting up all evening at camera reviews with a bottle of wine(LOL):)

thanks in advance,

Hi, wont go too far wrong with a d90, from canon i would recommend the 40d and its a good price, fair bit cheaper i think than the d90.

though the d90 is a better camera, i own a 40d and its fantastic. maybe you can try both in a shop and see which you prefer.

50d reviews have been not so good, ive never personally used one so no comment.

i can recommend Nikon, easy to use, great to handle and ive learned so much from my first DSLR from having a D70 for 4 years. the D90 gets great reviews, noise levels are low on high ISO's. if you want a semi pro under £1000, i priced a D300 at Dixons in Edinburgh airport and theyre selling body only for £864 compared to Jessops £1149.

I would suggest going to a camera store and seeing what you find is suitable. Silly comment you may say but in actual fact every camera make has a different layout and you may prefer one make to another. How they sit in your hand can make all the difference.

When choosing a camera do look beyond just the camera and look at the pice of the lens that can fit it and the range of lenses, also budget for the cost of a memory card as they don't come with the camera. Suggest a Sandisk Extreme 111 or 1V with 4 gig as a starter, any slower memory card and you could come up against camera pause in continuous shooting mode due to transfer rate from camera to card.

I can't say I am in favour of the D90 as it combines movie mode as well as stills and although I have never tried one out, I would prefer a camera to do stills only (at this stage I am desperately trying to fish a fly out of my cup of coffee) against a duel mode camera. Having said that it depends on what your main photographic theme is going to be.

You can find makes cheaper on e-bay from abroad but I would advise against buying due to the warrantee may not be accepted in the UK, presuming that is where you are. Also sending it back if it goes faulty could be costly.

As i said at the beginning trying out in a shop is your best route, you can read writeups till your blue in the face, this camera has better this than that camera etc. Whatever you choose as soon as you have made your purchase you will see something a little bit better at a slightly higher price, thats sods law.
Remember you don't have to buy from that store you may find that particular camera being sold by another UK company at a lower price so don't get carried away with the " must have now " syndrome.

Having owned Nikon D70s then D200 and now D300 (which I absolutely love), one thing I would suggest looking into is the controls. With my previous cameras I had to constantly dive into the menu to alter settings which was a bind to say the least, with the D300 all the major adjustments are situated on the body which is far easier, something to seriously watch out for. I can't speak for other makes and their layouts as I am in the Nikon camp

LOL - Id say youre not going to go far wrong with Nikon D90 kit, or Canon 40D kit. You MAY be able to squeeze the Canon 50D kit in your budget.

Biggest piece of advice: "camera doesn't matter" - don't waste a lot of your time with this thread - buy something and get out there shooting.

d90 is a good camera, will have money left for a lens too (find another 150 and you can get the 70-300VR) Am sure the Canon is just as good, go with what you prefer

Invest in glass and not camera bodies.

No-one with a good lens lineup now is going to be crying into their beer in 2012, but I bet a few of us who have dropped massive cash on the latest and greatest will be bemoaning the resale value of our Digital bodies!

I was told this when I looked at buying my first dSLR.....

I paid about £2800 for

D200, 18-200vr, 105vr, 50 f1.8, D40x with 18-55 kit, sb600 & sb800 plus 2 cleaning kits and 2 bags.......

The D200 has lost maybe 60% of its value
The D40x has lost maybe 30-35% of its value

The SBs have lost 5%-10% ish

The lenses are all worth MORE than when I bought them !!!!!

The exchange rate and getting them all from Digital Rev has helped all this but as an example the AF50 f1.8 cost £58 NEW inc postage !!!!!!

Oh and I have recently bought a D1x for £180, I am told they were £4500 when new!! If it was a lens costing that much 8 years ago or whenever it was it would still be worth a lot now !!

Canon EOS 50D. Job done.

...and a bag, and spare batteries and memory cards, and a remote, and a tripod, and filters, and...

I was in the same boat and got sick of reading reviews after reviews and spent ages pondering over which one to go for , so I basically looked at not so much what the spec they have but what features i would be most using and how easy they were to set up then made my decision on that after having a play on them at jessops shop , then googled for best price and warranty and finally got my D90 from Amazon and think it's a great DSLR.

Go for it
