What causes this strange mathematical style pattern?

Yes
I took this shot recently.

While touching it up a little bit I noticed this really strange pattern in the flare of the lampost cut off at the top. Check it out. Any ideas what causes that? I had a UV filter on at the time. I've not seen it anywhere else on the image.

that post pretty much nails it, as far as i was aware it's to do with the aa filter and moire theres some gubbins about relation to resolution and sensor pixel distribution vs fine detail but at the end of the day it's just something that happens :)

i know...it's scientific my explanation isn't it? :P

Strange. Were you shooting through a net curtain?

i seem to remember the 5D mk2 doing this in another thread over on POTN.

i cant remember exactly what the consensus was but i want to say that on long shutter exposures the sensor heats up and causes this pattern?

Looks like the fabric of space and time, or possibley something to do with the Matrix

Looks similar to the problems Mr. DonnaM had with his 50D. Canon eventually replaced the sensor and all is now OK.

Interesting. I'm going to do some more tests tonight and see if I can replicate. My other long exposures didn't have this issue.

It looks like a little tiny maze to me... Maybe each pixel has to find it's way to the correct location on the sensor, and that's the reason the buffer fills up occasionally - too many pixels lost in the maze

That's what I thought, lol. It's strange, but also kind of cool. If you could trigger that on demand you'd get some pretty interesting looking images.

If I see it occurring regularly then that's where I'll be going.
