I'm interested in your thoughts from a lens point of view and not the comparison of film verses digital. Also the view that you don't gain anything for the extra megapixels over the 40D and maybe even loose out on picture quality even with 'good' quality glass.

Your thoughts and opinions please :)

btw I don't own a 50D

You do gain with more megapixels.
CT posted some example of a shot taken on a 40D, 50D and 7D.
In each case the cropped image was better on each new model.
I've read plenty here comparing the 40D and 50D and whilst I love my 40D, if I could haveafforded 50D at the time, I would have bought one.

I can't really argue with what Mr Merklinger is saying there. While all those mega pixels on a crop sensor are what give you great cropping ability and the potential for jaw dropping detail when you get everything right, they'll also mercilessly punish you when you get it wrong - even the tiniest focusing errors are magnified. It's also very true that any weaknesses in your lenses will be shown up too, so as the pixel count increases, it becomes imperitive to have the best glass to exploit the real potential of these cameras.

The daft part of what he's saying is that you don't gain anything over a 40D with a 50D. If you're shooting everything full frame and printing at usual sizes, then you're not going to see a major difference. If on the other hand, you crop your images substantially, then the 50% extra pixels of the 50D makes a huge difference to how much you can crop while retaining good image detail, and effectively greatly increases the effective 'reach' of your lenses.

While lots of reviewers pay passing lip service to the cropping ability of cameras like the 50D and 7D, the mere fact that they're often bemoaning the fact that it's not yet another full frame camera shows that they don't really 'get' the camera or appreciate who the end user really is.
