Yes
Looking on tinter web for a new camera never had a slr or dslr just point and shoot things i found one or two i could afford and called jessops for info about the ones i like. He was saying things like this wont fit this system that wont fit that system whats he on about system? Does he mean i cant put other lenses on my camera unless they are the same make? or is system just a camera term for something? sorry if its a dumb question but i didnt want to ask the guy on the phone because i would sound like a right idiot

A system is just the make of camera you buy into, e.g. Nikon, Canon, Sony etc. Each system will have 3rd party manufacturers who sell lenses, flashguns etc that will be made just for that make of camera. System=Brand

Yes, unfortunately "system" has become a buzzword when talking about different manufacturers.

One to add to the bullshine-bingo card, just be thankful they haven't prefixed it with "eco" (..yet. :gag:). :)

Oh right ok so does that mean if i buy say a canon i have to stick with a canon lens? Or a canon flash? nothing else will fit? so what system has the best selection of extras?

The two main brands are Nikon and Canon. They are the biggest in terms of bodies, lenses and accessories, there are other brands such as Sony. However as I said, you can pick up 3rd party equipment that will fit the make of camera you buy. E.g Sigma and Tamron produce lenses for both Nikon and Canon (as well as other brands) but if you buy a Sigma or Tamron lens for a Nikon, it will not fit a Canon and vice versa. The 3rd party equipment is virtually always cheaper than the branded stuff, but not always up to the quality of the branded kit.

Well my photography goes all the way back to the early eighties, and it's been a 'system' since then. So buzzword or not it's far from new and is the correct terminology.:cuckoo:

'Brand' isn't close to the same thing. There are many manufacturers who sell different 'systems' from Bronica with 3 different MF systems to a modern Olympus with it's APSc and 4/3 systems. There are many others too and always have been, try fitting an EF lens on an old Canon FD mount camera or a Canon FD mount lens on an older rangefinder body. Or to flip it, Sony's use of the Minolta specifications, meaning the 2 manufacturers are the same 'system' (likewise the Fuji DSLR's that used Nikon mount lenses).

In short, the OP needs to go to a shop and discuss his needs, or just ask for advice here with details of them; his answers will soon lead him towards the right 'system'.

In a nutshell, yes, although there are third party manufacturers who make lenses and flashguns with a choice of attachment type. E.g. Sigma lenses, Nissin flashguns.

Just point out the bits that are wrong and I'll gladly revoke them.

It appears to me that your post was a bit kneejerky and wildly generalised, I offered actual correct information.....

Oh well.:cuckoo:

My post was deliberately simplified to give the OP a basic understanding as a starting point - this is the basics forum you see.

If you want to write an essay on it, don't let me stop you, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't insult my replies with emoticons or anything when I'm helping fellow members please.

Sigma is a brand. They produce accesories and lenses for different brands systems like Canon, Nikon etc..

These brands, produce different systems within thier brands. (Nikon J/V1, Canon's new M series)

Phil is exactly right in what he says.

ZoneV, your post was actually wrong though by suggesting a system is a buzzword for different manufacturers, whereas it is a standard for each type of camera.

The same manufacturer can have multiple systems, Sony Alpha, Sony Nex etc,.

Yes, I accept this.

You know what, forget it. :)

Those of you who wish to argue and bicker can go outside to the playground if you want to carry on otherwise there will be some enforced absences.

No more warnings.

Sorry you took offence - no insult intended, but your post wasn't just simplified - it was devoid of anything remotely useful. So 2 answers in to a very simple question and the OP had gained no useful knowledge at all. It's the basics forum - for people to learn :)

I cleared up some misunderstandings that might have arisen from the previous posts - just trying to be nice. I'm prone to verbose - that post could have been much longer:geek:.

Typed up whilst we were getting our wrists slapped.

Blow it out of your smart arse, Phil.

Its a mine field really without really knowing what sort of camera you will be looking to buy.
Best advice i can give is tell us what you would like and we can go from there.
within canon for instance you have cropped sensors you have full frame and some lens will fit one but not the other.

Do not worry about it, with a forum of this size there is always one or two that throw their toys out of the pram at times.

You will see this from time to time but do not let it put you off, there are many many good people on here full of advice for new starters and even poepl that have been taking photos for years still learn a thing or two.

No need to apologise - it's a really nice place.

What do you want a camera for? What's your budget and what other interests do you have?

The 3rd party equipment is virtually always cheaper than the branded stuff, but not always up to the quality of the branded kit.

Gosh, you are a little behind the times aren't you? :)

These days there are third party products which are widely accepted to be better than the branded stuff. It sometimes costs more too. It's also true that the branded stuff is not always up to the quality of the 3rd party manufacturers.

You just can't generalise and say that branded is best these days as it varies at different product and price points.

It makes the world a complicated place.

I will give it a bit longer but not much if this the the standard!

No need to question it john it realy is a great place on the whole. yeah you do get some A-holes but you will on any forum this one is alot better than most.

most on here like phil v and that live and breath photography trust me they have prob forgot more than us newbies will ever know but some take offence when when people get put right or make a statement and are proved wrong they take the hump and start a shouting match.

The mods wont put up with it they slam the door and your on a holiday end of so dont be to put off john there is a wealth of knowlege in this place. have you been to the out of focus section its a great place for a banter and to meet others?

Tbh i shudnt realy be talking about this here because these threads are for asking questions not debating but i just wanted you to know its not realy a bad place to come and learn.

Amazing how dramatic threads get. It's the Internet...Get over it!... Jeez!

Could always go over to DPR for some good advice :D

Seriously OP, people have tried to help. Roll with it, enjoy :D

Don't feel sorry, you've seen a side to TP that thankfully doesn't show up very often  it's very unfortunate that it happens to have reared it ugly head in your first thread

With excess of 7,000 active members it's enevitable that occasional some of them will have a bust up, be it someone having a very bad day as appears to be the case in this thread or because of a long standing issue between a pair of members

As to your original question basically my understanding of the phrase System will normally relate to type of mount that is used of the camera in order to attach the lens to the camera

For example the current canon line up contains EF, EF-S and Very new but EF-M mounts, now you have

Full Frame e.g. 1D and 5D series of cameras these will only take EF mount
Crop e.g. 1000-1100D, 300-650D, 10-60D and 7D that will take both EF and EF-S mounts
Mirrorless (very new) will only take EF-M Mount

So this is often what people will refer to as a System, at least that is my understanding

Mate i've only been here a couple of months but on the whole people on here are really helpful and genuinely warm and friendly...Don't let this one thread put you off :)

I am only going on personal experience, having had Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm 2.8, then buying a Nikon 24-70mm and seeing the difference, same with the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and then upgrading to Nikon 70-200mm 2.8, or the Sigma 12-24mm for FF, then comparing to the Nikon 14-24mm, all more expensive than 3rd party, but higher quality, so not behind the times mate, just real life experience.

You're right about all of those, but in the last few years we have Sigma's 1.4 primes, which generally beat the equivalent Canon / Nikon equivalents, and sometimes cost more. There are a couple of other notables too - but I'm not really a gear head so they're not at my fingertips.

Thanks - I think:thinking:

I don't consider myself an expert and spend as much time here learning as teaching, I try to keep my gob shut when I don't know what I'm talking about - so you won't find me all over threads I read for information. There are some people on here who didn't forget anything and have amazing knowledge of photography - I'm not one of them I don't think I have the capacity.

And I never started any shouting match, I was trying to be helpful.

For the people new to the forum, the real benefits of this forum are;
- Very active, meaning any posts will pretty much be guaranteed a good number of responses
- Very knowledgeable people
- Actively moderated so any altercations as earlier in this thread are quickly dealt with and only after reminders given to the offenders (I have been issued a reminder and it works to keep you on track with what this forum is)

As with all forums, need to keep an open mind and not get upset as it always go sour when people start sniping. In the big scheme of things, what someone says on an internet forum is not really that big a deal. Apart from my posts, obviously :)

Didnt say you started a shouting match phil i said when some get put right as in when one poster makes an incorrect post and another poster corrects them sometimes they take offence at it. As for the phrase they forgot more than we will ever know its just a nod in the direction of experience take it as the compliment it was ment to be not a snipe at you

Amazing how dramatic threads get. It's the Internet...Get over it!... Jeez!

No need for me to get over it, I was concerned for the OP.
I am new to this forum, but am most certainly not new to internet forums or photography. I have seen plenty of bickering on other forums but not at such a childish level - quite surprised and a little disappointed!
Still we will see.....
