What does he mean a system

No need for me to get over it, I was concerned for the OP.
I am new to this forum, but am most certainly not new to internet forums or photography. I have seen plenty of bickering on other forums but not at such a childish level - quite surprised and a little disappointed!
Still we will see.....

I browsed another forum once, BCF (Bike Chat Forum?). I have no interest in this but was curious as a freiend was addicted to this as I am here.

Mods seem to be a joke. Racism and swearing seemed to be accepted. Glad I'm nothing to do with that.

If you are that familar with other stuff. I'm suprised you're dissappointed. A lot more sh--it goes on all over the net than here, nothing no where near as bad.

I dont know the OP, do you? Why the concern? This false emotion only makes life harder on line for you.

I`m not a big fan of The Jeremy Kyle Show, and find it difficult to accept that entertainment has come down to people airing their dirty laundry in public, but find it interesting when many arguments aRE evolved from social media sites such as FB, Twitter and forums. Don't use them if you are going to be offended or someone else, who you don't even know, may give you concern. On the other hand, dismiss what you don't like, and learn from the good bits you do like. Don't make a mountain of a mole hill and be dramatic in a well moderated forum like this. Accept there will be a few twots who will troll/upset you and use the RTM button if you really find it nessacery.

I have been regularly visiting forums for several years now and I find that this forum is well moderated, helpful, interesting and occasionally heated (not necessarily a bad thing - and helps to keeps it from becoming a sterile lifeless place). In my experience, this forum stands head and shoulders above a lot of the others and I find your experience and conclusion regarding this forum hard to accept because it certainly isn't the same as mine.

Looking on tinter web for a new camera never had a slr or dslr just point and shoot things i found one or two i could afford and called jessops for info about the ones i like. He was saying things like this wont fit this system that wont fit that system whats he on about system? Does he mean i cant put other lenses on my camera unless they are the same make? or is system just a camera term for something? sorry if its a dumb question but i didnt want to ask the guy on the phone because i would sound like a right idiot

Hi Paul

As has been said (in between all the other posts) a system is the make of your body - so a Canon system, Nikon system etc etc.

With regards to what will and won't fit, obviously their own lenses, flashes etc with fit and if your looking at aftermarket ones - Tamron, Sigma etc, just make sure it says Canon fit (or whichever system you choose).

You then need to be aware of if the lens is suitable for your body eg. certain Nikon bodies require specific lenses (to do with Auto Focus motor),

Hope this helps ...

Also worth mentioning that I don't think it is a silly question and you would not have sounded like a right idiot to ask the guy to explain what he mean't by system. It is his job to know about, and be able to explain, all the technicalities of photography.

Hang on, this is Jess0p's we're talking about! ;)

Hi Paul,

welcome to the forums. I think the first rule is...never be afraid to ask a question here.
I think you asked a perfectly sensible question in the right place and have a deluge of responses...all trying to be helpful however it turned out with some disagreements this flattering emoticon :cuckoo:

Also as for someone being "not impressed" well people bicker sometimes but the testament to the quality of this forum is shown that once an argument became bitter: a forum admin stepped in and handed out a temporary suspension. A bad forum community would have let it rant endlessly!

So Paul, the response at all answer your question? I'm afraid it's a bit weird to get your head around if you're new to the wonderful world of photographic lenses.

A big caveat to this reply - see posts #6 & #33 for details

DSLRs are a minefield when you first think about getting one, there is so many things you need to know before spending your money. Have you any family or friends who use DSLRs? I found its useful if family /friends use the same system as they can offer help/advice or maybe borrow kit from each other (helps when you think the maybe a problem with a lens or camera).

Have a think about what you think you are going to photograph, it will probably be quite varied at first but you will probably start to specialise in a few areas. I started photography wanting to do landscapes, after a while I notice that wildlife was more accessible so started to specialise in this. I changed 'systems' last year from olympus to Nikon for several reasons that i wont go into here but i can say i wont be doing it again. Once you start buying several lenses, flash etc you will be unlikely to change when you next upgrade your camera body. The best advice I got here was camera bodies change all the time, good glass lasts you years.

To be honest you can't go far wrong with either Cannon or Nikon, both are great manufacturers and offer lots of scope regarding lens flash etc and of course 3rd manufacturers offerings too. Go and try a few out, hold the different manufacturers cameras and see which feels good to you. If you find it uncomfortable you wont use it or take it with you.

Have a look on the equipment forum, work out your budget and what you want to photography. there will be people on here who can offer you lots of help and explain what will be good for you and what will work with what. This forum is great, there is always people who want to help and pass on their experience to on others.
