Hi,

I see the word "strobist" used in different contexts both on this site and also in the mags.

Can someone give me an idea of what it means?

Thanks

It is to do with someone using flashes.

american's call flash lights strobes ,,,so anyone using one is a strobist

A 'Strobist' is someone that uses flash, generally off camera with stands, light modifiers and remote triggers. The flashes (or strobes) are often used creatively to great effect. There are some good resources on the web such as Strobist101 and planetneil.

our friends across the Atlantic also like to couple 'strobist' with the word 'awesome' on flickr. :D

Primarily it relates to the use of off-camera flash.

Think it's actually a registered trademark to David Hobby isn't it?....

Not sure but its kind of become a word we use so often it has a meaning. Like you 'google' something or 'photoshop a photo' regardless of search engine or software being used people take it to mean the same thing. Think its called becoming part of the lexicon, you know you've made it when they use your name or brand in part of everyday conversation like that.

I'm working on getting people to say, wow you really grahamed that shot LOL, you can only hope its used to mean a good thing.

it is an incorrect yank term to describe someone who uses flashes - it has no place on this side of the atlantic

Hey there's nothing wrong with using unfamiliar terms to describe ordinary things in photography, its how we hide all our secrets from the general public, like the secret pro mode on all dslrs that we don't talk about ;)

BTW I'm an Englishman living in Australia, and no I wasn't sent here on a boat.
