On digital bodies, a skylight does little more than introduce the risk of flare and other problems, although some will argue that it provides a useful layer of protection. On film, skylight filters warmed up colours very slightly - a job now done by WB.

They are designed to remove UV and reduce the blue slightly.
They have no effect on Digital as they are not UV sensitive.
The do provide some physical protection to a lens. However the Pre digital ones can cause some internal reflections and quality loss. But the best thin pro-digital ones cause few if any problems, and quite a lot of protection.

If it affects the digital image at all other than when the camera is pointed at a bright light I'd say you'll have to look veerrrrry closely.
I use filters on most of my lenses when shooting in potentially camera/lens damaging conditions and if there's a chance of shooting a scene containing a bright light I take them off.

That was considered a good filter in film days. There are now better ones, but I doubt you will see the difference if it is kept clean.
