What equipment for a newbie?

I'm new, only been taking photos for a week! Using my boyfriends camera at the mo. was wondering what equipment i should look to buy?

It depends on your needs and your expectations.
What do you expect from the camera? Manual controls? What's your budget?

perhaps some idea of what your bf has so we know what your used to using and what sort of photos you like, but best bet get down to your local camera shop and have a feel and shoot a few shots to see which feels right.
