I’m going to try booting my 2012 iMac off an external SSD as the internal hard drive is very difficult to replace. A240GB SSD should be more than enough as my iMac internal hard drive says 73GB is currently used (photography stuff is saved to external drives).

Currently amazon prime is running a few 240GB SSD offers. Question is which SSD would be the best option?

SanDisk SSD plus 240GB:

Crucial BX500 240GB:

Could anyone suggest a good USB3 SSD caddy too?

I've been using a Kingston 120GB as backup for my MacBook Pro and it boots nicely when required (via the USB-C socket).

Thank you for the replies. I’ve ended up going with a Samsung t5 250GB portable SSD. The main reason was because the fstoppers article below had tested this SSD recently with exactly what I want to do.

I could have saved a bit getting a 2.5 inch SSD and a caddy but caddy’s seem a minefield. If the Samsung T5 doesn’t work I have a small portable SSD to use with the laptop instead.
