What fast (short) prime for action?

I need a short prime for some indoor equestrian shots. I gave the 50mm a go but it was a little too short.

I did some test shots with a few of my standard zoom lenses and on average shots were taken around 80-100mm but I had enough space to work between this focal length by moving around the arena. As I am working within the arena, and not at the side, I do have more freedom of movement than I would if I was shooting from the sides of the arena.

Anything like the 70-200 f2.8 is way out of budget for the time being so was thinking about the 85mm 1.8g or 105 f2.8 VR.

I'm swaying towards the 85mm, purely because of the 1.8 and that I want to use quick shutter speeds which counter acts having VR.

I have not used either so any user opinions would be great.

As i generally pre focus then track my subjects super quick AF is not the biggest issue and I usually use single shot rather than burst.

The 50mm was quick enough focus wise, so if the 85 or 105 are just as quick, that would be ideal.

Any other recomendations in this kind of price bracket?
 
I presume you are talking Nikon and Showjumping?
 
How about tracking down a used Sigma 50-150mm 2.8? I've owned two in Nikon fit the past and would love to track one down on A mount now (hens teeth!) They sell for around £200-250.

Apparently they are a bit hit and miss with AF, but I certainly never had any issues.

Can only find one on ebay! Other than the newer £800 version.
 
i'd suggest you tuck the money away and resist temptation to buy one until you can afford the 70-200, why not go for the Sigma 70-200 if money is a factor, they are still awesome lenses.
 
Something like the Nikon 85mm f1.8 would be a lens that even if you do get a 70-200 f2.8 you would still have a use for imo/e ... the same goes for the the 105mm vr macro lens, which btw af's quite fast ... in terms of iq the difference between any of these lenses is so small as to not really be a factor imo they are all great lenses (85mm f1.8G, 105mm VR macro and 70-200 f2.8;))

Getting the Sigma as Peter says may also be a good option too, they are getting some really good reviews on the latest version.

if 80-100mm is your most used focal length, then a 85mm prime will be highly desirable. Go for it :)

I love mine 85mm f1.8, it's sharp and fast.
