What fast WIDE lens?

It gets great reviews, many D300 owners cite it as a perfect companion to the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8. One of these days I'll get around to buying one myself.....
 
Canon make an EF 14mm f/2.8 L. That's really wide when you use it on a 5D/1Ds, but it's not the most affordable lens out there.
 
I have a Tokina 11-16 and I am very happy with it :)

why so wide for weddings??? you don't want to make the bridesmaids look fatter!!! :)

I would have thought a decent quality Canon glass like the 17-55 IS, tack sharp and f/2.8. Perfect for the 40D. I have the tamron 17-50 but would prefer the 17-55...one day will sort that out.
or the L glass alternatives, 17-40 or 16-35 but they are pricey.
