what Filter lens for my Nifty Fifty?

Been looking for a Filter lens to go on my Canon 50mm f1.8 lens.

What's best to go for? There seems to be various types.

I take it they are the 52mm thread?

What reason do you want to fit a filter on your lens ?

If it's purely for protection buy a lens hood instead they offer far more protection unless your going into the desert.
 
yep protection of the main 'lens', but also when I do my street photography shots mainly.
 
I was always told to use protection. Lol

I use the Hoya UV filters so as the lens doesn't get scratched
 
I don't bother with a filter for protection on a nifty as the front element is quite inset into the lens body. Only ever use them on zooms.
 
UV filters are unnecessary and therefore useless with a digital camera, often discussed here, btw what threats to your nifty fifty are you expecting?

Not much shrapnel/sand/or other abrasives on the streets of the UK these days, plus the front element of a lens is prob the most robust part of it,get out there & have fun & quit fretting!

PS lens hood for a nifty fifty is pretty tiny & IMHO not worth it

UV= does nothing but make images worse
ND= reduces the light entering the camera to reduce the shutter speed
PL= Cuts reflections in glass and water plus others, darkens blue skies and makes clouds pop. Also reduces light by 1- 1 1/2 stop.

Especially with a lens like this where the front element is relatively small and quite convex (making it very strong) and somewhat recessed, putting a cheap flat filter on it is, as other people have said, pointless (and in certain situations can degrade IQ, even with the most expensive filters). Any knock serious enough to damage that front element would crack the plastic body open far easier anyway ;)

Filters are a personal thing some do some don't I have tested with and without on my 24-105 a Hoya pro 1 and couldn't see a difference. I have also dropped that lens twice and have the ding marks on the ring of the UV filter to prove it. The filter saved the plastic barrel but the glass was probably
y never in danger, supposedly front elements aren't that expensive to replace although I've never heard an actual cost to prove it. To be honest I wouldn't bother on a 50 I don't with my canon 1.4
