what flash do you use?

Marumi ring flash around £130 from Amazon (y)

Les ;)

Very nice- I also use an off camera, Sony flash with a 5 metre sync cord- but the OP was looking for budget solutions (y)

Les :D

580EX & 580EXII here

If your using a 1:1 macro you'll probably get away with a diffused hotshoe flash, something like the jessops AFD can be picked up for about £40 used - personally dont like the light from a ring flash - i use a 550ex with my siggy 150mm and a MT24-EX with the MP-E

I gave up on even thinking about flash, whilst I use three in wildlife I think technology has moved on, therefore try this.

Ringlight flash, and before anyone knocks it try it.

SEVEN different power levels, and you can chose right OR left hand lights or ALL and that is three choices ALL with seven power levels, AND that is constant light or flash.

Do that with ringflash. £40 yes £40

Caon and Nikon available, I have both, and with the many filter rings there isn't a lens I have it doesnt fit.

I cant see it for Sony or from amazon.co.uk :(

Thank you though

Only Canon or Nikon.

BUT have you thought of Wireless, get a cheap wireless setup, attach it and you have it for SONY.

Just place the wireless sender on the flash mount, and the receiver and battery box with controls on a !L" shaped £9 Ebay flash bracket next to the camera.

Will post some pics tomorrow, off to camera club.

By the way off camera on full power it is THE most powerful torch I have.

I am NOT saying nor will I try to say it is better than a "proper" flash, after all you get what you pay for, and for the price it is good, for what I want it for it is good, I wanted to see if I was interested in closeup or if it was a fad, if and when I improve I will cosnsider better, but best to throw away £30 than £200+ if you find it is not for you.

Thanks for the sample JSER - I can't see the exif is that taken at f16 / 1/200 ?

Sorry no (and I know what you are going to say) it is F16 200asa at 125th.

I agree "flash" offers speed for those little buggers and the ability to shoot smaller f stops at higher speed, for me though with still life this is perfect.

I will ask if I may, Ring"flash" for Canon, have you heard of

Marumi DRF 14C Ring Flash

Thanks

Oh come on are you seriously telling me that all those great shots were taken with a bit of plastic attached to the camera with the camera flash when others spend hundreds on ringflash

Is that serious eh, well :bonk::bonk::bonk:

God :bang::bang::bang:

See that is exactly what I have said time and time and time again, it is the PERSON that counts NOT the gear, Bril photographs.:clap::clap:

I hate you......

Not sure if there's sarcasm in there or not :)
But yeah, that's my setup for macro right there. an efs 60 macro and a bit of plastic.

Just envy ;):) sheer absolute 100% ARRRRGH envy.....

Excellent photos Bagger. Thats what I'd like to achive in time. Any chance of some more pics of the diy diffuser, possibly showing how you attached it to the lens. ta

Thanks :)

Its simply a piece of garden wire looped with an elastic band to hold the loop closed tight.
Stapled to the arms that come off the looped garden wire is the side of a plastic milk bottle.
The loop fits snugly around a groove on the end of the lens. Because of the elastic band, it allows me to remove and replace when needed very easily.

Bagger, you have just saved me a fair few quid on a specialist macro flash. Will be raiding my old man's greenhouse at the weekend :)

OK as a follow on to Bagger, and his tips, I have tried what I already have, see these shots.

If it hadn't been for Bagger I would not have thought of something as simple as the Prolite Bounce, and the gold inserts available (also silver) can be used for warmth if needed, Prolite bounce, new Ebay £15

This was on full auto, 200th sec at f22, the image has NOT been adjusted in any way at all, straight from camera, HOWEVER I always reduce the size for Photobucket..

Problem with them is they don't fit larger filter threads, so cant be used on say a Canon 28-135.
