What flash to go with ?????

I am going to get a new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50 mm f/1.4 G Lens for Portrait pictures and a Nikon Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR Micro for Macro pictures and wondered if there was a Flash unit out there for both applications??
I originally looked at a SB700 but then I see that a lot of people taking Micro pictures us a flash ring so just wondering if there is a flash out there to kill two birds with one stone???
 
i wanted a flash to use generally and to use for macro work and have just bought the sb700. I`ve only just started to use it but i`m really happy with my choice, easy to use and can be used as a remote off the camera. I`ve taken some macro shots using it and have tried using the wide diffuser and the dome diffuser to soften the light and got some nice results.
 
I'm buying a flash and I played with a few yesterday. Canon speedlights were very good but I also played with the jessops AFD360 which, ok, didn't have as many manual features as the Canon but was a very good flash, especially in ettl mode. I tried it on a couple of macro shots, albeit with a raynox, and it worked beautifully (even though I had to switch to manual as you can't use any auto functions with the raynox). Of course with a dedicated macro lens you can use it in full ettl mode.

For the price it's a very good flash, worth considering the Nikon compatable version.

I'll be buying one one way or the other, either as a main flash or a slave to the speedlight, I was impressed. Only downside was a fairly slow recycle rate on full power but you can counter that with high nm rechargables.

If money is not an issue, would I be better off with a SB900 rather than a SB700 or is the SB900 overkill for the kind of photography that I will be doing, see below;
Inside and outside portrait using 50mm f.1.4G
Everyday shots using 18/200mm AFS
105mm AFS Micro taking bugs, flowers etc

Well if money is no object I would go for the 900, its nikons flagship model. I have a couple of them and they really are very good. They are quite big though if that bothers you.
 
There is always need for a flash. Using additional light is more about control of exposure than having enough light. The D3s is unbelievable at high ISO, but when the light is that low it is usually very poor quality too. A flash allows you to add fill flash in high contrast situations AND learn to be creative with bounce techniques and off camera flash ( sort of the same thing).

Still get an sb900 a flash is always worth it. Mine is very rarely off of my camera when out with the family, I think you will bd amazdd at the difference that a fkash will make. Look at the show us you macro srt up thread to see that a standard flash can give excellent results for macro.
 
Yes, get an SB900. It can do so many things, and will transform your pictures taking when you learn how to use the light fully.

It can also be pressed into macro work, perhaps with a bit of help from accessories.
