Just spent the evening shooting a wedding reception of a friend. They paid the DJ (for photos) but he was obviously clueless when it comes to photography. I still haven't got a flashgun for my 6D and I could have used one! Most of my photos were passable but of course the darker it got the more noise... What should I go for? A cheap yongnuo or simple canon? I don't see myself using it too often but I do macro as well so tempted by a remote trigger.... what do I need that wont break the bank??

I'd be looking for the Canon 430 type of flash then, if you're going to use it occasionally, it's a good mid range flash...

I would say depending on budget is going to determine what flash you get...I 1st went for a £90 Nissin flash and it was a good starting point but soon became clear it's not all cracked up to what it should be...didn't have High-speed sync, Radio triggers didn't work on it, Slave mode was hit and miss due to pop-up pre-flash.

Sold it and bought a second hand 430EXii and it' such a difference having kit that just works...

So look at budget then get the best kit you can afford...
