What format to put ext HDD in for mac only use

I have finally moved over to mac for all my home cpu. I currently have just bought a Ext HDD as a backup, but what type do I need to format it to for the most solid results on a mac only usage?

Once this arrives will then reformat my old backup drive which is NTFS and use that as a backup backup.

Go Mac OS Extended - no need to go journaled unless you intend using it to boot from. Then set up with time machine

It depends! Do you think that you might ever need to transfer stuff to a PC. FAT32 is fine for most stuff and should your mac go down you can still access it on someone else's PC as it will be readable with anything. Also you might at some point want to plug it into a router to share info amongst other computers, unless it is an Apple one then it would need to be FAT32 again. If there is absolutely no chance you will ever need it to be accessible via a router or another computer then either of the non case sensitive standard formats will be fine.

I am sure it will be used purely to backup Imac and photos. I have 16gig memory stick to transfer stuff to PC if needed at any point. To be safe will prob format one mac specific and then backup backup will prob kep FAT32

So just format it Mac OS Extended is the best way to go then?

Yes, that will do just fine.
