What have most men got one of but women have none?

No
And now I don't have one either :)

That's right a Prostate. Mine was taken out earlier this year due to Prostate cancer, at the moment it seems that the cancer had not spread outside the prostate but it could have done had I waited any longer before going to my GP.

This month is Prostate Cancer Awareness month

The Prostate Cancer Society's main site is
http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/

If you are a man and are lucky enough to still have a prostate have a look at these sites
If you are a woman and there is a man in your life, husband, boyfriend, dad whoever, have a look at these sites.

It is no exaggeration to say that you could save a life.

Well done Kev, I hope it all goes well for you and you get the all clear eventually.

And there was me thinking something else!

On a serious note:
For every 10years of your life, there's a 10% increase in the likelihood that you'll have some form of prostrate problem

Hope all is well for you now and in the future

just out of interest what are the symptoms ??
Isn't there a test PSA (or something like that) but understand it can be pretty rough and ready
Hope all goes well Kev

My symptoms came on very gradually over many years.
Hesitancy when starting to pee, wanting to go again after a few minutes, weak flow, getting up more at night to pee, feeling that the bladder was not empty.
All of these can be caused by an non-cancerous prostate which has enlarged so don't think that you definitely have cancer if you have some of the above.

Someone who was in hospital with me blocked up completely and had to go to A&E, they drained 1600ml from his bladder - AFAIK most men go for a pee at 400 to 500.

The PSA test does give false positives and negatives but if the test is positive they take some samples from the prostate and check them for cancer.

Have a look at the links I posted earlier, even if you do not have any symptoms now it will make you aware of what to look out for.

Thanks Kev, no symptoms at the moment I'm pleased to say, but it is always good to know what to look out for...will check out the links
Thanks for the info.

Kev, I'm very glad you've come through it and out the other side. I've been there myself, just over 3 years ago, and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

As cancers go it's probably one of the least likely to kill, but it does still kill a lot of people and you're absolutely right to advise people to get checked out.

I was going to answer a sense of humour.:naughty:

Glad to see your coming out of this ordeal with a positive outlook, as you say it could have been so much worse as most of us males hate to go to the doctor and would put these symptoms down to age.

Thanks for the words of support.

As has been said most men, including me, hate to go to the doctor especially when you know how he is going to examine you :)

I kept putting it off, blaming my age, but finally decided to get checked. As far as the doctor was concerned it was just a routine examination and, surprisingly for me, I was not embarassed at all. Normally I don't even tell people when I have a cold as I hate fuss :)

Early diagnosis can mean a permanent cure, late diagnosis can mean lots of pain and even death. If you have the symptoms get checked out now.

Well today I had my first PSA blood test since the operation.
The meeting with the consultant is next tuesday so I will find out the results then.

and a bump for this thread as it is still Prostate Cancer Awareness Month :D

I saw the consultant today about my results - all OK so far, the PSA levels were undetectable. :)
They will keep checking me for a couple of years to make sure but it is a good start for me.

How about you though, have you checked the Prostate Cancer Awareness Month site yet?

Kev
