What Head do you use and why?

looks good but what a price, I am OK for macro I have a focus rail, I like the look of the Manfrotto 229 3D Pro Head BUT why a different plate ahh!
 
Manfrotto 468MGRC2 hydrostatic ball head most of the time. Got it at -50% and went for it, and it does deliver.
 
I have a Manfrotto 498 RC2 ball head which does me fine.

I also have a Manfrotto 808 RC4 3 way head. The counter balance springs "for smooth positioning of heavier loads" means your camera or lens can't suddenly flap down when you completely release a handle.

Looks good, but it got a larger plate :( not match my mono-pod head
 
I'm thinking about getting an RRS head, as a lot of other heads don't seem to have the lever release & I'm not happy with my Manfrotto head. Good to know they can be bought through Kerso!

Didn't know Kerso was selling them. Go for the BH-55LR, it's superb.
 
55 is too big for my needs, was thinking 30 or 40.

I have the 55 and it's not as large/heavy as you would imagine... absolutely solid as a rock and so easy to handle. Saying that, a friend of mine uses the 40 with the 5D and it's perfect as well :)
 
Manfrotto 410 geared head. Heavy, slow and precise. I'm never in a hurry when using my tripod.
 
Can any of the pan/tilt fans explain to me why they prefer these to a decent ball head?

I have several heads - all of them are ballheads.
 
Manfrotto 410 geared for Macro and Landscapes specifically, has pretty much made my Manfrotto 322 trigger redundant - but the 322 one handed operation is crazy fast to position if not so accurate.

I bought the short centre column for the 055XProB and have my 410 permanently attached, useful for getting lower and keep the 322 on the longer supplied column.
 
Height isn't an issue it's weight for backpacking etc, hence wanting one of the smaller ones ;)

Although their "Which head" thing does say the 55 is suitable for the Macro rails, which the other ones may not be, I'll need to check before I buy.
 
I have the BH-55 and still use it for landscape photography. Bit over the top for the 5D Mark II and 17-40mm but I did buy it when I had large primes.

I've had the 55 for about 3 years and remember e-mailing Kerso at the time but he couldn't match what RRS were quoting, because of the very favourable £/$ ratio.

Absolutely awesome head. I will own it for life!!
 
Well interesting reading this thread.
I like the idea of the gear ones give more accurate adjustment, as ball head you set it and then you find it not 100% right.
What one? as I have a 7D with maybe a 70-200mm IS 2.8 L or the 100-400mm IS L and also a x2 or x1.4 with the max on it I am guess I need the largest one but as my mono-pod has the small fitting Manfrotto head and plate.
I don't what different QR plates.
