Yes
So with the release of the iPad 2 i fancy a tablet. I have macbook and as much as i like apple i fancy a change and like Android as you can do some playing with roms. So what recommendations do people have for a not to expensive tablet. Quite like the look of the vega but by the time you factor in a 32gb micro sd card its over £300.

So advice anyone????

Anything worth buying is going to be over £300 Euan. There are loads of tablets for a lot less but all are a bit slow/low res/old android builds/lacking in something you'd need.

Lots of good stuff in the wings though, Dell have a 7" out and 10" coming soon, the Asus Transformer should be out by now.

Will be interested to see what the new Blackberry tablet will be like.

the Ipad2 16gb is great value for money imo at £399. Second hand prices for Ipad 1 has dropped considerably and can be had for around £250 on auction

Head over to Apple's site. They are doing the original iPad 16gb wifi (refurb) for £289. Cracker price.

You have 2 options on your budget

Apple now

Wait to see what happens with the Android tablets and pricing. I believe the Vega will be getting honeycomb, not sure on timescale yet.

Yeah id kind of factored in around £300ish, the vega seems like a good price but not having used one wasnt sure of the screen quality and speed. Didnt realise dell were bringing some out as well, what are they running as an OS?

DELL is bringing win7..
as for others...
all the new ones will be around 400 mark.
I am waiting until june/july, as for when new samsung should be released

and playbook may be interesting as they say it will be able to run apple and android applications

I get a lot of spam ads for viagra and the like, I don't think it's advised to click on any of them though.

I have a Vega. Speed is fine (especially when you run a custom ROM). Screen is OK but suffers from LCD screen fade - like looking at a LCD monitor from different angles. Looking at it laying flat on a table from a shallow angle is probably the worst. There are some videos on YouTube of screen angles for the Vega.

Have to say I don't use it that much though - not because of the screen, just that the main PC is on 24-7 and is easy to get to and type on a real keyboard.

Thanks for that

Thanks for the info, how sharp is the picture on the Vega, can cope with the viewing angles as i have an older archos 7 which is fairly pants. Mainly want it to be responsive to be honest. The ipad 1's are a bargain but fancy getting away from apple and on to android.

Not sure what you mean by how sharp? It's a 1024x600 display - I guess it is similar to any netbook out there (I assume they've just reused a netbook screen). Displaying web pages it's fine - flash content is obviously bitrate/resolution dependent. Not really displayed any pictures on it.

Modaco.com is the largest resource available for the Vega as far as I know.

i'll have a google to compare it with the ipad screen i think as thats really the benchmark for tablets.

It definitely isn't as good as an iPad screen for viewing angles, but it didn't disgrace itself in any area when I had it next to a friends iPad...

Thanks for all the replies, like i say i can cope with the viewing angles being narrower than an ipad. And i dont expect it be an ipad beater etc. I mainly want it for watching films etc when im away at work and easy surfing the net at home. How well does it play films?

I like the idea of playing with the roms at modaco, was quite into that when i ha my windows smartphones before my iphones.

Might stick a wanted ad up as well to try and get one with a reasonable card with it.

Depends what format they are in. Up to 720p seems OK, but .mkvs aren't supported. Also, audio is only AAC/mp3 - no DTS/AC-3 support.

Relevancy meter reads zero.

Just been round the modaco stuff and the vega looks like the one, got a bit excited about the toshiba folio until i read the reviews. That was a shame as it had decent internal storage and an sd lot.

yeah the xoom does look good but a bit pricey, i like the fact that the vega gets good reviews, is cheap and they reckon is android 3.0 ready.

Ooh didnt realise it was that soon, although no doubt we will get ripped off over here as usual!

some interesting stuff mentioned here

Wow! Fantastic! Hang on though. Just how many apps are there for Android 3.0 on the Xoom?

Twenty.

Only twenty?

Yes, but they promise there'll be some more real soon now.

I'd prefer the iPad2, just weighing up a v2 or a refurb 1st gen

Dixon's is selling vega for £199.99 at the moment :)
