Apologies for the vague title - my son tells me that there is a Canon 400D with the kit 17-55 lens in secondhand shop near him. It is up for £250 and is supposed to be boxed with all the bits. Is it worth that?

Where on the Nikon scale is it? D80 ish?

Thanks for any guidance.

Chris

Thats a great price for a boxed 400D and a good entry-level camera too

Not sure where on the Nikon scale it is.

Add to this a 50mm 1.8 and a 55-250 lens and you will have a nice package for less than £500 all in

I have the 400D and its a nice little camera, obviously in the modern world there isn't all the gizmo's and gadgets on it but it you just simply want to take a nice photo then a 400D will do you the job!

Check my Flickr and 365 for shots (granted more with the 50mm but you get the idea)

I use a 400D and find it a great cam i use it for taking live stage shots and wildlife i am well pleased with mine.

Great upgrade from your bridge and at that price its a steal!! do it, you wont regret it!

Just make sure it 'fits' nicely in the hand, they are quite small for a man's larger hands, my wife has one, nice camera, just a bit small for me.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated. I'll get it sorted tomorrow and picked up. A bit apprehensive that it's not a Nikon as I 'grew up' with a D80 and then a D300.

The body alone is small, but throw a grip on it and its fine :D

If you grew up on a Nikon D80 and D300, well they are pretty good cameras, IMO both the Nikon's are much better than the 400D. Though the 400D is a very reasonable priced camera.
You can not go far wrong with this camera.

I've had a 400d for a couple of years and whilst it might not have every gizmo or be the best handling it is a very good value for money body and the limits of the rest of my gear and myself are reached before the camera normally ;)
Just look on flickr to see what it can do: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/eos_digital_rebel_xti/

Although as others have recommended, you may need a grip - for larger lenses and in particular with an external flash I could not live without the grip.

If it is with a 17-55 lens then it is bargain of the century as they are worth about a grand  18-55 is the standard one, the same with the 70-300, it is more likely a 75-300 for that price, the 70-300 is a good few hundred. I have both and plan to change the 75-300 for a 70-300 as soon as I have the money to spend as the build quality is pretty poor and very plasticy.

400D is a good beginner camera, very user friendly though I am looking to upgrade to a 40 or 50D after a year with my 400D.
