What is different between filter?

Been looking at getting some standard UV filters to protect my lenses, but there is a huge variance in price... Why?! Are some really worth 10x others?
What is the key difference in them? And why wouldnt i buy a 'el cheapo' one?
 
I wouldnt bother buying a UV filter in the first place.

Save your money and buy a lens hood.
 
You've spent £xxx on a highly crafted, precision engineered lens, with glass of such high quality its taken days to make..

You then stick a £2.50 piece of perspex in front of it...

The filter should be as good if not better than the elements of glass other wise whats the point in having an expensive lens?

A mate of mine used to always say that to me, but then a passing bike at a club meet flung a stone it him and scratched the front element. He now has UV filters fitted.

Still, you wouldn't notice a front element scratch on your photos!

Tbh there are some situations a very good (an expensive) uv / protection filter may be useful, shooting in sand storms and rallying being two. But most people who use them leave them on all the time!

Lens hood.

Ok, so what, other than a name makes a good filter? Im just tryIng to establish what makes up the difference between £3 perspex and £30 perspex :D

Appreciate the hood suggestion... I guess i have a nervousness about the amount of dust i'm about to encounter on safari.

Or a £100 piece of Perspex!

In a nutshell, the expensive ones interfere with the light passing through it a lot less.
