What is going on here?

Well, 'white death' looks like it's tucking into another meal, but as you say there seems to be an interloper. My guess would be, given the position of the other spider, that it's perhaps just been caught up in the action? Did you stay and watch what unfolded, did white death become lunch too? Or do any spider specialists want to comment?

When I went back the small spider had gone.

Maybe the little one thought he had a chance lol
Other than my poor quips, thats a nice shot of a White spider doing what it does best, predate, I cant remember the name but it would be easy to find it.
PS, its a Hoverfly btw.

The white one is a crab spider, not sure which one. The small one had done a runner when I came back for a second look. Poor fly was still alive.

The small one may be a male trying to mate while she is busy.

I have never seen one we do not get them this far north

Unfortunately couldn't see the whole of the smaller spider, I hadn't seen one of these until recently and now I am finding them regularly. All of the ones I have found have been white and sitting in hogweed. Have now found this link so looks like it was a male.
