What is the difference between 5DS & 5DS R?

Yes
I'm thinking of moving on to one of the above bodies primarily for the MP and the fact they have the same control lay out of my 5DIII, so making either of them a great extra body to have in the bag. So can anyone explain the real world difference between them in simple terms for nature/landscape photography. I like the high iso performance of my current body, do these bodies also have the same attribute?
Thanks in advance for any input/opinions.
Andy.

As the dpreview link above shows, the only difference is the 'R' has a "self-cancelling" anti-aliasing filter so should give cleaner high-res output at the cost of possible moire effects. The high-iso performance isn't anywhere near your current 5D Mk3 though.

You wouldn't want to push the 5ds / r further than 1600 ISO, they're not great at high ISO.

Why are you considering these for the MP? Are you looking to print across a high rise block?? Your 5d3 already has far more MP than anyone would really need!

Get a used Nikon D800 at £900, a 14-24mm lens at £7-800 usable for lots more... Lol

My thoughts were the option to crop further into the image when taking images of birds or other similar shots. A 50% crop would still give me more pixels than an uncropped imaged from my 5DIII. When printing I usually print at around A3 for wall display. I could of course get a second used 5DIII or wait for the rumoured 5D4 if that's in the price range, although it will probably be over the top on first release.
Any other thoughts people have will be appreciated so as I can plan how to get this past SWMBO without to much pain.

I had thought about it but changing the whole system would be to much hassle. :canon::p

Forget MP when it comes to zooming (well, to a degree!). It might give you more pixels, but it's not that simple. There aren't *any* lenses that can fully resolve the MP count of this camera as yet, so you wouldn't actually be getting the most out of it when it comes to harsh cropping. And when a lens comes out that can fully resolve a 50 + MP image it'll be mega bucks! In low light it would also look pretty poor. You'd be cropping into a noisier image at above 400 ISO so there's that to factor in too.

You're far better off buying longer lenses for your 5d3.

5Ds / r should give similar or cleaner image once downsized to 5D3 resolution? I've seen some reviews say exactly that. It's like 7DII at pixel level at full res.

More MP never hurts. 5D3 is fine for printing up to like 36x24" and then you start noticing softness from closer distance. What if you want to sell much bigger, what if your customer wants ridiculous file size? I had both inquiries in real life.

I'm certainly upgrading but not at the current price point. 5D4 is due out some time in the near future which will make 5Ds considerably cheaper; or maybe 5D4 will be the one to get.

You can't say more MP never hurts as it blatantly can :) - it increases relative noise. Above 1600 ISO the 5ds / r images aren't why I'd call clean. Cramming MP into a sensor also increases the heat generated by the sensor, giving you thermal noise on top of that.

Downsizing it doesn't clear the noise problem, it's there on capture. And the crop modes only crop the image, the pixel density is the same and that's what creates the issues.

I'd rather crop a clean image than a noise affected high MP image. It's not as if any camera these days is lacking MP. You can print billboards from an iPhone, as Apple proved very well (albeit with some clever noise reduction no doubt).

Hi Andy
Hope this finds you well haven't seen you in a while.
The DS and R will resolve more detail than the 5 D mkiii using the same lenses 2 or 3 different testers have found this out I think Tony Northrop tested the 5d mkiii the 5dr and the nikon 810? That's worth a look on You Tube. To get the best out of these cameras you need canon's newest lenses and primes to boot. The biggest question is one how much more are you willing to spend on lenses as well. I must admit to thinking along the same lines as you are about the crop factor but below are the reasons I haven't gone down that route.
You are losing ISO capability, Frame rate and buffer capability. If the subject is that far away as well then you have to consider heat haze mist etc also playing a part so the question is how many times will you benefit maybe a 800mm f5.6 would be a better investment.;)

@lost Life is never as straight forward as I'd like. :( I was hoping this would be a way of stretching my 400DO lens when on safari but as ever it not that simple. 800mm f5.6 now there's a thought  it's getting the wheel barrow into my hand luggage to move it about that would be the stress bit then.
I don't intend to get rid of the 5DIII it was to be a second body to have a spare and to save changing lenses when out in all that African dust. I'm now deliberating between another 5DIII used from here which will have all the same controls or maybe a 7DII with a slightly differing layout but will have the crop factor. It's 9 months before my next trip so I've got plenty of time to mull it over.

You're right we haven't met for a while now but all good things must come to an end sometime.;):D I haven't forgotten your offer to go chasing the SEO's sometime, maybe later this year when it warms up a bit. Thanks for the input.
Andy.
