What is the loop?

I've seen many people refer to it when they're photographing aviation.

It's the low fly area in the valleys of west Wales, not too far from Aberystwyth!

Hi Sarah. Its an area in Wales called the Machynlleth Loop. Its a series of valleys that the RAF use to train at low level flying.

It's a bloody nuisance when you are kayaking quietly on the sea and this thunderous roar suddenly comes form nowhere and then the shock wave hits you and they scoot overhead...nearly tipped out a couple of novices several times.

Should be made illegal in this country and they should go and do it somewhere else....spoils my fishing solitude too! Then on the south coast you have those blasted tanks making great splashes and booming noises.....the navy are as bad, although at least HMS Cambridge has silenced her guns now. Phwew, one good fishing spot untroubled by wargames!

There was a crash not too long ago, a Tornado aircraft if I remember correctly.. but it was low flying somewhere up north, the Lakes maybe?

In the Falklands they stick to over flying colonies of penguins and watching them all topple in one massive Mexican wave as they lean backwards to watch them fly over.

My brothers ex RAF and a family friend was in the Royal Engineers, its a family joke that his Falklands War contribution was standing penguins back up

I can recall at least 4 crashes in the mid wales area over the past 20 years. When they hit the ground there isn't much left...
