Me personally I would say a portrait is trying to capture the personality of someone. Capturing a tiny moment of time which portrays them and who they are.

Hope that makes sense :bonk:

I like that approach - though it's not always the model/person you're trying to express, fashion portraits come to mind. I'd tweak it to say someone or some/thing/, especially if you're looking at any fashion photographers later on :)

Wikipedia is a good source of info.

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

THis is more or less the way I ave always described what a portrait is.
