This is what I would go for.

Lens:Tamron 70-300mm, f4-5.6 DI lens -£123
Camera:Canon 500D? £640 or Nikon D90? £649

You have a good budget,

sorry I cant help you much more as im late for work, maybe later.

Thanks, any other suggestions anyone?

Taking a trip to Jessops in a while to have a play

First thing I would do is go into a decent camera shop and try out the cameras to see which feels nicest to you to hold and which has the controls that fall most intuatively to you - bearing in mind what you have previously been used to using, because handling / using a camera is a very personnal thing - some like Canon, others Nikon etc etc.

Once you have decided on make, decide on size -> the Canon 40D is a larger camera than the 450D for example. This will narrow the field down for you, so you can then look at your budget and what can you get for it

Hope this is some help, not answering your question directly I know, but it is a personnal thing a camera.

Good luck in your search

Thinking off the top of my head,

How about

Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS EF-S £219
or Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM £449

For protraits
Canon 50mm f1.8 EF mark 11 arount £90

There is this deal in Camerworld Canon EOS 450D with 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS £724 or body only £469

Bags
Again so many out there and different types.
I have a Lowepro Primus, bottom compartment for camera gear and general stuff on top which I would highly recommend. you can get it for around £60 from Wilkinson Cameras.

Tripod I have a manfrotto 190 xprob with a 460mg which I would definitely recommend.

I have a Yongnuo shutter release which is really good ( ebay special ).

I can only advise on Canon, whichever route you go down try and play with as much of it as you can before buying, but definitley shop around. That primus bag is about £140 in Jessops £70 Jacobs. Overall I have found cameraworld.co.uk to be fairly competive. Good luck.

Thanks, ive noticed Jessops have good prices on the cameras to get you in the store, then the extras are well overpriced :)

Is the Canon 70-300mm worth the £300 more than the Tamron?

Thanks for the Tripod reco

ordered a camera beanbag, looks like a great product!
