Well i know it's a big question, but what recommendations can you come up with out there. will be used for spreadsheet work and syncing with the blackberry, internet via wireless, storing and at present minor photo editing.

Cheers

Jon

Do you have a budget?

Does it need to be mainly portable or is it going to see 99% of it's life at home?

EDIT:
Initial suggestions from me would be;

HP G62 £430 Currys/PC World i3 2.26/4gb/500gb/15.6". Got one of these for my brother a couple of weeks ago and it's a pretty snazzy laptop for the money
Samsung R540 £468 ebuyer i3 2.4/4gb/500gb/15.6"
Samsung R730 £530 ebuyer i3 2.53/4gb/640gb/17.3"

Will be used mostly at home, and do not think that smaller netbook style machines will have enough punch. as far as the budget is concerned, it's not that i have no got the cash, but do I want to spend it, but also realise that to a certain extent you only get what you pay for, so go on get me salivating and twist my arm, wrench that wallet from my pocket!

edit, oh whoop, whoop.....100 posts!

Good shout, just been looking at the hp you suggested and a bit higher up the range they do some with the dual core amd athlon processor, any good?
have had toshiba's (presently) and in past, don't know how they compare with hp's.

Go one of the intel i3/i5/i7 (depending on your budget). Go with Win7 64bit and at least 4G of RAM. 17" is easier to edit photos on. As to performance of the CPU, find the exact number and as an indicator of performance (relative, if not absolute) use: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I'd avoid the AMD processors for laptops - they may be cheaper, but they are less power efficient so eat batteries quicker.
