What lens ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH

For the last 3 months I have been considering a lens for a bit of wildlife maybe motorsport photography something that will work on my D300s I have been looking at what Mr Rockwell has to say and trying to look at what lenses you guys use.

I did use to own a sigma 150-500 I think it was on my canon but would prefure a nikon, has anybody used the Tokina AT-X PRO AF 80-200 F2.8? maybe with a 1.4 tele converter? money isn't really a problem but I can't see the point in spending loads when I may only use it 3 times a year, it seems that the nikon 70-200 2.8 is popular but I really can't justify the cost, should I just stick with another sigma or maybe a prime 300-400mm? I just don't know.

Any help or info would be most welcome and should I purchase a suggested lens I will send the advisor one of my trade mark rude word keyrings ;p

Are you planing on shooting in low light, if so then a 70-200 f2.8 makes sense ; The Nikon is very good but the Sigma offering is also good enough. Either of these can be used with a TC.

If you are not shooting in low light then a 70-300 VR is an excellent choice and can be had for less than £300 used.

I use a Sigma 100-300 f/4 with a 1.4 tc for motorsport...don't do much wildlife. You could think of the Nikon 300mm f/4 afs and add a 1.7 tc which is a much sharper combination that the Sigma but without the flexibility of the zoom.

The Siggie 100-300 f4 is a cracker of a lens - I've owned one (Nikon fit) its the ideal wildlife lens to have, there's many reviews for this lens on many a wildlife site.... I've used it with 1.4x tc and have no probs what so ever....

If you can get one then go for it - I would certainly have my old one back (if the member I sold mine too didn't sell it on :bonk

Had moderate success with an m42 tair 300mm lens (50ukp) and vivitar 2x convertor (8ukp).

It at least will show you whether it has the reach you are looking for.

Personally, money no object have a look at the 50-500 sigma, around 800ukp used (or less if you are lucky).

If you go to the link in the sig for m42, there are some moon shot (crops) I took using the tair, and some renault sport shots (first time out with the lens).
