Yes
Hi guys,i'm new to all this but i am looking at getting a Canon 50D with the main objective of shooting motorsport and wildlife. Is there a lens that would cover both of these or would it be a case of getting seperate lenses for each type of shot.Obviously i am not looking to spend fortunes on lenses as I will just be startng out but i would like something that would get the most out of the 50D in terms of picture quality
All help gratefully received

well it might be better with two lens as I do not know how you will do your motor sport track side pits or what? but for your wildlife a 100-400 L IS and if you want a second lens the 70-200 L IS.

Thanks very much for the advice but i certainly dont want to be spending over a grand on a lens at this early stage.Any cheaper lenses that would do the job adequately

thats much more like it price wise. Are these a good starter lens for my applications? anyone got any experience of these lenses

The EF-S 55-250mm IS is a nice lens for the money. It offers a little more width than the 70-300, but you do loose some length. I think the 70-300 IS offers slightly better IQ and build, but it is a lump to carry and does cost quite a bit more.

Thanks Orville,i have been looking at that lens and it does look like a great starter lens so i think i will start off with one of those and work my way up the photography ladder as i become more familiar with the DLSR
Thanks again

ps anyone selling one of these lenses as i don't really like ebay unless i can help it

I bought one off another forum around a month ago for £295 including lens hood. I believe that Kerso, who I've not used but comes highly recommended by many on here, has new ones for £349.

Here's a different idea. If I were you I'd save money on the body - get a used 40D, or 400/450D instead of the 50D - and put the money towards better lenses. In most circumstances, spending money on lenses will get you better pictures than spending money on the body. Plus it's a better investment.

I would agree with this totally. A second hand 40D would be a great body and if it allows you to stretch to a 70-200F4 or a 100-400L thne that would be a much better combo with lenses you can keep forever.

cheers guys,I have just bought a brand new 50D with the EF 28-135 IS USM lens kit which i am still trying to get to grips with in terms of picture quality.Just need to start saving for a couple of L series lenses

I appreciate you asked for advice for the best lens to go with the 50D but you would be trying to "get to grips" with a much better image quality had you followed the advice on here and bought a good s/h 40D and 70-200 f4L.

Especially when you say

Thanks for the comments but i would rather a new body rather than second hand tbh and a second hand 40D and 70-200F4L would have cost more than i got this kit for but i do appreciate your comments
