what lens for motorsport

Hi all I would like some advice on what lens to go for on a Canon 40d mainly for motorsport (bikes) the only lens I have at moment is the sigma 18 / 250 but I want sharper photo's.
 
I've not really thought about a price as i'm in no rush and have time to save I just want a lens that will give excellent Sharp shots the shots I have taken with the 18 / 250 look ok until you zoom on or crop the image I have posted some shots in motorsport if you have chance have a look
 
Wozzaaah is right I have not been on here long enough to go to the classified section
 
I use a 100-400 on my 40D and have been happy with the results.

I use a 100-400 L as well and tbh I think for bikes and being on the spectator side of the fence you need 400mm, even this can be short requiring heavy cropping.

I'm on my phone so can't post any pics but my Flickr is linked, i was concerned that it wasn't very sharp and sent my 50D and lens off for service, the camera ended up having the shutter replaced and the lens had the focusing mechanism repaired, it's a lot sharper now but I've not been racing since.

There are always loads of 100-400's up for sale, and seems to be a reasonable start price.

sometimes even the other side of the fence as well, i was helping out at silverstone yesterday covering a track day and a 400mm with a 1.4 extender on was still sometimes short :cuckoo: and thats with a 1.6 crop 7d
 
Looking at the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 on eBay would this be upto the job and would this be a big improvement on my sigma 18-250

in good light they will be fine but as summer is at an end it may struggle in darker situations and when it gets a bit too cloudy and rainy.
 
Would I be right in thinking i'm best to go with a fixed f2.8 lens

yep the 28-300 does struggle a bit on dull days. but from what i have been told the 28-300 is a better lens that the 100-400 hence why its nearly twice the price new.

It's about 70% more expensive because it's a 10x lens, as opposed to a 4x, and therefore needs a lot more engineering to produce decent quality images.
 
What is a tcs (teleconverter ?) Of so would this work with the 18-250 and with what sort of effect

A teleconverter multiplies the focal length of a lens. Typically they are 1.4x and 2x

A 1.4x used with a 300mm lens gives you a 420mm lens, but with 1 stop loss of light, so 300 f2.8 becomes a 420mm f4

A 2x doubles the focal length, but loses 2 stops, so a 300 f2.8 becomes a 600mm f5.6

A teleconverter would not be recommended with your 18-250 lens, as at the long end, the maximum focal length would be 350mm, but the maximum aperture would be only f9, which casue problems for the autofocus.
 
This weekend I was at Brands Hatch and was using a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 and sometimes using a 2x teleconveter but most of the time was finding 200mm ok.

Just looked at the photo's from the zoo. Nice and sharp this lens could be one to invest in. What ate they like with the converter on.
 
The ones from this weekend with the converter look ok aswell once I got used to using it I found that I had to up the shutter speed as I had a bit of camera shake.
 
I use 100-400 most of the time, had her for 6yrs now, works well for me. But possibly I'd go with 70-200 2.8 and then you have options with TC's...
