What lens to buy for my D700?

OK, so I've got my lovely new toy and I'd like a bit of glass for the front.

I'm just a landscape/portrait kinda guy and although I photographed sports yesterday, I rarely have need for anything long.

Even when I do, my old Sigma 70-300 (bought when I knew nothing of DX/FX does the job just fine).

So, whilst I was going to buy the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 at a four figure sum, I've decided that I perhaps don't need to spend quite so much.

What alternatives do I have to that lens please? I'm not worried about maximum aperture, and it doesn't have to be a Nikon. It doesn't have to start at 24mm, I think 28mm is OK, as one day I'll buy a prime 24mm f1.4.

If Rockwell hadn't slammed the 24-120mm VR that would have been the obvious choice, so given that I really want just one lens and to leave it on the camera, I'd like suggestions please.

Thanks all.

Not wide enough for when I'm out photographing building sites (which I actually do quite often for a client).

Just been looking and I think the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 might fit the bill. Anyone got an opinion on those?

That's the one to go for, a bargain if ever there was one

nikon 28-105 is not only great value, its a great lens

wide to portrait and macro as well

Heard that's a right good one. Not tried it yet.

Yeah the Tamron 28-75mm f2,8 can be good. Probably better with the model without the built in motor.
If it's wide enough for you the old Nikon 35-70 f2,8 is a real bargain

35mm isn't really wide enough for buildings. Even 28mm is pushing it a bit, 24mm is ideal and about right for landscapes too. If your going to buy a prime 24mm at some time then the 28-75 is the right range for what you do.
