What should I get
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2

Please help as I'm still learning thanks
 
But I don't want to get too close to the subject sometimes in room at party shooting from a distance maybe about 15 meters from them
 
A 50mm lens will be great for close up portraits on your 500D. It would probably be OK for general shots from about 15 metres too, although normally I'd recommend a 30mm lens for party shots at closer distances.

Which one? The 50/1.8 is a very cheap option! Why not grab one and see how you get on? If you like the length, replace it with a 50/1.4 which is better made and faster.
 
You can get a 35 2.0 and a 50 1.8 for the same price as a 50 1.4 so if you were considering the 1.4 why not get both?
 
get the 1.4 .... My favorite lens by a clear mile

it feels solid, its fast, it sharp and being able to open the aperture up to 1.4 means you can shoot in a darkened room without flash ..... it loves babies and faces, you can at close range narrow the DOF right down so the only the face or even just an eye is in focus and not need a flash.

85mm is too big for a crop sensor indoor personally, I find even with the 50mm I fall over stuff walking backwards ... at 85 mm I would be in the wall for some shots


get the 50mm .... and splash out on the 1.4, its worth every penny

Hi guys thanks for all your comments you have all been a great help I tried both lenses and decided to go for the 1.8 and got a few other things and new bag I'm well pleased think once I get better I will upgrade to the 1.4 many thanks again to u all
