What lens to shoot a series of these?

I took the shot on my TZ7 on my exchange, at the TZ7's "4mm" (I don't remember exactly, but I'll assume that that's the TZ7's widest setting of 24mm equiv.)

So that would supposedly be about the same as an 18mm lens on my D5000. I have the standard 18-55 cheapo kit lens, which could be okay, but I was wondering if there'd be another option to shoot like this without spending loads? I'm trying to focus my money on portraiture lenses, with this series being part of Pre-U coursework :)

I'm just wondering if it's even possible on DSLRs, as macro's aren't wide enough, and most wide angle lenses don't have the minimum focusing distance/magnification.. :S
 
The 18-55mm kitlens can focus pretty close.

But the panasonic probably went closer. One thing bridge cameras do very well is close focussing, especially at wide settings.
 
My sigma 17-70 focuses very very close, especially with a macro filter fitted (love those things!) but not sure that would give the same DOF? I'll try later!!!
 
Gah this is frustrating... That shot went down really well on my DA, on other forums and with the head of art at my school... It'll be really frustrating if I won't be able to shoot it on a sensor that gives printable results... (the TZ7 file is just about good enough for web usage, but it starts getting pixellated at even 1350 wide :S)

I'm not entirely sure whether the FOV will be enough on a crop, but I'm pretty sure school will have a full frame camera for me to use if I absolutely must...

Of course there's the Sigma QC issues and it isn't a cheap lens, but if it's the only way to get these shots I think I can forgo the 50mm for a bit :S

I tried the 18-55 and the focusing distance just isn't close enough for me...

Are there any lens hire sites that have this lens? I checked lensesforhire and they don't have it.

I don't much fancy a load of softness on shots like the above, and CA could be a right pain. Zoom lenses generally aren't meant to be used with extensions.

What /might/ work, however, is extensions on a wide, cheap prime... I'll look into that tomorrow
 
Hmm I think the 24mm f/1.8 would be ideal for this but might be a little pricey - I'll look into the Sigma 17-70 Macro as that should hopefully be okay, I was happy with the DOF at f/3.3 on my tiny TZ7 sensor so f/2.8 shouldn't be a huge problem :)

Plus it's a lot cheaper so I can still get both of my more normal primes :)
 
I just shot this one for you with the 17-70 OS
I didn't have time to set up anything properly I am afraid but it gives you can idea how close you can get.
I didn't have your photo to hand but tomorrow I might mess around and make something a bit more similar if get chance

This was F/22 1/30 ISO200 @17mm with a x4 Macro adapter screwed in.
The photo has been cropped and the size has been reduced by 40%

This seems rather similar to the OcUK thread. ;)

You need to learn about depth of field rather promptly to avoid a mass of disappointment. The DoF on a small sensor camera is huge compared with that of a DSLR. You'll probably need to use f11 at least to match the TZ7's DoF.

As I said on OcUK, I'm a big fan of the Sigma 17-70mm but you do need to learn the basics before jumping in.
