Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions on what lens to use at the Great North Run in Newcastle? I'm leaning more towards the 70-300 I have or would the 55-200 be better.

Don't want to switch between lenses if I can help it.

Are you after shots of individual runners or more atmospheric shots?

If you want single runners find a spot 1 mile or so in where the pack has spread out and are running towards you but will turn away. This will get you a clear shot of the runners coming straight towards you before they turn away leaving the next in the frame.

Either lens at the long end will do, which one depends how close you are to the runners. I normally use a 135mm but my 300mm is just as effective at longer ranges. Focus speed in servo mode is the main thing to worry about.

I think I want mainly individual shots with the odd few atmosperic. I think the red arrows are doing a fly over too so I'd like some shots of them.

I don't know what the 55-200 is like but I do know the Sigma is a bit sluggish with focus speed so I would lean towards the 55-200 as it's also a bit wider for the atmosphere shots.
