Nikon 18-55mm. For a walkabout I generally like to walk closer to something (where possible) instead of zooming in. So I find 55 is more than enough for me.
Staying with Nikkor, and thinking zoom for a bit of flexibility 35-70 f2.8D used, around £300. LINK
Was the Pro zoom choice for many years, and forerunner of the 28-70 / 24-70 models, it is a sharp lens with a nice colour tone.
On your crop body there is always the 17-55 f2.8 but that is going to be pushing your budget, and I would think a bit short in focal length on the long end, though the Tamron version is close enough optically, and a lot cheaper.
You need to decide around what focal length you want, all of the above are f2.8 which will help with subject isolation, its just if you want a bit wider (17-55), or a bit longer (35-70).
