What lens?

Yes
Ive learnt so much about my camera lately and tried alot of various things to shoot.
I'd like to shoot more specific areas, with that in mind I'm going to have a little bit of money spare in the next week or so and wish to buy a new lens but I don't know which or where to start!

I enjoy taking shots of nature, random objects, landscapes, street shots and people

I've looked through the for sale section and there's so much on offer!
First that caught my eye and may be in my price range (200 I'm thinking) is a 50mm lens. What subjects would I be looking to shoot with one of these?

I suppose the main thing I'm after is an upgrade from the STD lens.
Can I get anything with good quality for my 200 budget?

Hiya

The nifty fifty is a good little lens for the money(About £70 to £80 new)

Have a search on the forums and that will give you some idea of the images

I managed to get a Sigma 18-50 EX DG f2.8 2nd hand for just over £200 so that may well be worth looking into as well.

The Sigma 70-300 APO is also a good 2nd hand buy as a starter zoom( Can't remember how much, around £100 ish 2nd hand)

I do think I'm swaying more towards a 50mm lens, for the low cost, and seeing everyone rave about them I'm going to give one a try!

Are there many varieties with the 50mm soze? I know there's 1.4 and 1.8 but are there more differences I should keep an eye out for when buying?

Paul

To be honest I am not sure

I know the 1.8 is cheap and cheerfull, that's what everyone calls the nifty fifty
It is a bit plasticky but does the job well

The 1.4 is better build qualaity and a lot dearer

I think there is also a 1.2 but that is serious wonga :naughty:

Go for the 1.8 for starters and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results. I have the Nikon version and I've got some fantastic results with that.

Think you can pick-up a new one for about £85 or if you're a bit more flush the 1.4 is about £300. Big jump in price to the 1.2 !!!

Cheers

Robin, Pete,

Thank you for the help and advice, I really do appreciate it!
I'm definately going for the 1.8 50mm, problem is I cant see any in the classified section, and I cant post in the wanted section? Do I have to have another membership for the wanted area?

May even consider new but second hand would suit me to the ground on the right price.

If you spend half your money on a nifty fifty you wont have enough left to buy much of anything else, if it were me I would try and get just a little more cash and go for a small zoom like a 24 - 70mm which will give you more versatility than just having a 50mm.

If you want the nifty Kerso was doing them for £75 - personally i found it too long on a crop sensor and hardly ever used it- save a little more and look at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non- VC - sharper than a sharp thing.

If you have the kit lens only then maybe a 50 isn't going to give you a lot more as you have that focal range covered, it's better image quality and will give you a shallower DOF but you might want to try something vastly different, I suppose that would mean wide angle, telephoto or macro. Maybe a telephoto with decent macro functionality?

Woah the can of worms is open!

The let down with the 18-55 IS I have seems to be the sharpness. Good DOF but the image is let down by the sharpness of the object.
Can I gain what the 50 gives from my current lens or even a zoom as mentioned above?

I do appreciate the help! I'd not want to waste my money so it's good to have a place like this with as many helpful people!

To be honest, when i shot Canon I was often pleasantly suprised by how well the kit lens can perform, sure if you you push it to the ends it's a bit soft but keep it away from the ends of the zoom and around F8 it's actually quite capable. Depends what you want it to do I guess.

Thank you all very much for the input in to my thread, I really appreciate it!

I decided on buying a brand new 1.8 50mm, saying I love it is an understatement!
This lens has inspired me for a new chapter in photography, everything it produces is exactly what i've been after!

Here are a few shots taken straight from the lens (beside a resize for image hosting)
