What macro lens?

Hi guys,

Been looking for a macro lens for my 550d and have come up with two options really;

The 60mm EF-S and the 100mm 2.8 USM. Will have a budget of around £300, so will have to buy second hand.

Is one considered 'better' than the other, or it it truly down to the prefered focal length?

I've got a 100 2.8 L macro and it's superb. The IQ is amazing and even the AF is surprizingly good for macro (hardly ever use AF for macro though). The working distance for the 100 I find comfortable, you don't have to get too close to the subject. What part of Lincolnshire are you in Joe, you could always come and have a play with it if you're nearby.
 
The 100/2.8 is great and the real difference is in working distance. The 100mm will allow you to shoot from further away (15cm from lens front at 1:1) compared to the 60mm (9cm from lens front). It may sound like a small difference but you don't want to squash your subject with the glass.

The L-version of course has IS but that's about the only difference.. I have the L version and used to have the non-L, IQ-wise they are pretty much the same unless you need the IS.
 
Thanks guys, I think I will probably go for the 100mm. Looks like it would be easier to catch some interesting subjects.
