Yes
I wasn't sure where to stick this, since a magazine isn't really equipment (unless you roll it up and use it as a lens hood when you left yours at home :naughty:) but this seemed more than aptly general.

Anyway, on to the specifics:

I'm looking to pick myself up a subscription to a photography magazine of some variety; I've had a peek at the range on offer and thus far Practical Photography seems to be the best on offer for what I'm after; Not really too fussed about gear reviews (Got the whole internet for that), but I do like a bit of expert guide here and there on subjects I hadn't considered (the issue I picked up has an article all about how to photograph Harbours.. very intriguing), and it has a nice balance between photography techniques and digital imaging

Of course, this is based on in depth research at the sainsburys mag aisle, so I'm assuming there's more out there; any recommendations people would ...recommend?

I would recommend that you do not subscribe to any.
After 6 months you will find stuff being repeated.

Stick 10 pound under your bed then once a month go to smiths and browse and pick up what grabs your eye.

And buying different ones every month keeps things and ideas fresh.

When I started out in June 08 I was buying all the mags under the sun, then it was whittled down to 3 Practical Photography, Digital Photo and Amateur photographer.

Of these I now only but two:

Digital Photo as they have great guides, I love the photoshop ones, I cut them out (they were pull out and keep guides) and have them all in plastic wallets to help me to learn and I do use them.

Amateur photographer isn't that great on guides but does have some good articles and as it's weekly I look forward to my mag and a mug of tea on my own :)

Practical photography I don't find that great.

I semi regulary bought Practical photography a couple of years ago, but as said they do just repeat the themes, although usually on a ~12 month cycle I think...

I got a sub to DSLR User purely for the crumpler camera bag offer.

Otherwise I would just dip in and out every month by buying any mag that looked the most interesting in Smiths.

So depressing, I finished working at my Smiths store today! Heh, back on topic though, I had a browse today and the cover to Digital Photographer (5 pounds) was good, but the content not as good. There was another that I had a browse through which I thought did look good, but the cover not so. I think I need to have another browse!

You'll also tend to find that quite a few mags are published by the same group so they seem to repeat stuff more regular between each mag.

I have a sub for PhotoPlus because I got a Manfrotto Monopod with it. I am buying everything under the sun at the minute but find I end up here more often than not and the advice etc... you can get from here is unbelievable.

If you really need to buy a mag, then as has been said previously, buy one every now and again for the articles you want to read. TP has everything else covered I think :D

Get a sub if the free gift is worth it !!

Amatuer Photographer is the only one I buy nowadays. Lots of people rate Digital Photographer, but I find it focusses too much on that, the digital aspect of photography.

in the past i've pretty much bought them all but the one i get now is the BJP ( www.bjp-online.co.uk ) i know it's like £2 odd a week but IMO it's the best mag out there for not repeating rubbish and trying to get you to over edit pics.

There are some great photo's in RAZZLE!!!!:lol::lol:

But seriously i buy whatever looks good at the time as i was going to subscribe too. I think I'll just buy what looks good as each month different mags have what i want. Out of all of them Photo Plus is good for Canon users and this month Practical Photography and Digital Camera were excellent.

I hate to think how much i have spent on magazines over the years. Enough for a real Porsche i expect:eek:

I would not sub to any despite the money saving.
I prefer to browse in the shop then take one with interesting content.
All mags seem to do theme months when a large part of the mag is devoted to one subject and if that is not of interest then it's a waste.
I find some of the lens reviews in Digital Photographer questionable.

i agree with alot of the above, i would never subscribe because they always have themes each month and end up repeating themselves. have you ever noticed that like every january issue give away a cheesy "DLSR survival guide" to try and grab peoples attention.
the other day i was bored and went to hae a look at some mags i had a look at the interesting digital photo (but it was in that cellohane wrapper so you never really got a quick teaser) and in the end i went for digital camera because i was interested in the indoor photograhy techniques that involved those beatiful water sculptures.

also at my weekly marketlace theres a stall that sell all the photography mags for £1 each (mind you they are a few months old, but who cares i bu them for the techniques and not to keep up with the latest crumpler bag or competition)

I quite like Black and White Photography. I do shoot black and white film and it is oriented around that, but even for colour digital users it has a lot about photography as an art. It's probably not worth it if you have no interest in B&W photography though, there's a fair bit about film, scanning and darkroom techniques.

im not subscribed to any but i find myself switching between Practical Photography and also Digital SLR Photography, both have very helpful diy sections and find most of the stuff in there pretty useful.

I really should start buying magazines again as I often find myself sat at home wondering what to read, and like everyone's pointed out, they do have some good ideas/reviews etc in them.
