what next after the d90

hi all just wondering what you guys would recommend as a next step up from my d90 image quality wise thanks as always

A Nikon D7000 would be a good step up if your restricted budget wise.
The new D7100 is excellent too.

But you have to remember the new wave of high mega-pixel DSLR need good lenses too.

My first slr was a d90 and then stepped up to a d800 last year. Love it!

It depends on what you shoot, what your budget is and what lenses you have? Also what about the d90 makes you feel you need the upgrade (might help determine what to get next)?

Crop - d7000/71000 or full frame - d600/700/800

A bit more info might enable us to recommend something appropriate to your needs.

I've just gone from a d90 to a d7000. So glad I did is so much better. As for what next... If you sticking with crop(dx) then the d7100 or d7000 depending on budget. If your going full frame next then I can't really say as only had crop.
 
This depends a lot on budget, what you shoot and what lenses you're using. It might well you're bettering off investing in better lenses.
 
Hang on to it until late this year at least... heard a rumour of an upcoming D400...
 
i guess the logical step at the moment would be the D7100.
the D7000 wont really give you a massive "real world" improvement over the D90.
D7100 if you have to buy a new body
but you'd prob be better off spending D7000 money on a lens....
 
I've gone from the d90 to d7000. I'm so glad I did. Far better low light with cleaner iso. So makes those shots sharper straight away. Then there is the focus, a massive improvement over the d90. The d90, had a tenancy to back focus and a little slow. The d7000 is much better. Even more so after a little play with the focus fine tune. Faster shutter and frame rate. 1080p for video. Then there's other feature the d90 doesn't have like the interval timer should you choose to ever do that. Weather sealed. Extra memory card slot. Few extra buttons for faster access. Optional user pre sets for various things. And obviously a few extra pixels.

For me a big improvement. But as said depends what you shoot to. With Flash the d90 is plenty sharp enough. But with d7000's better iso (Yes not as good as some fx bodies) reduces the need for the faster lenses slightly.

I agree with everything you said apart from the ISO.

Being only a third of a stop better, they are pretty much the same...

Nope, sorry Phil, but I can't agree with that.

I went from the D90 to the D7000 in November, and the difference is considerable IMO. Shots I'd delete at 1600 on the D90 are reasonable at 3200 on the D7000. I'm not sure (and not bothered) what the numbers say, but noise handling between the two, all other things being equal, is significant.

@OP I found it to be a good upgrade. Many things are similar, so it wouldn't be too much of a change, but ease of use and keeper rate are quite a step up. Obviously, given greater budget I might have made a different step, but for relatively little outlay I'm happy.
 
Be careful which lens you go for if you follow that advice too
I went from D90 to D700, and absolutely love it. But before I bought it, I bought the 17-55 for D90 (great together) but it isnt a full frame lens, so sits gathering dust with my D90 and 35mm, also not very good on full frame
Great for back up or second camera set up, but wish I'd have thought ahead and bought something suitable

Take a look at DPreview's studio test then (which is equal in all things).

D90 isn't on there anymore but choose the D5000 which shares the same sensor but is slightly better on ISO and see they look the same.

.....but perhaps there is a difference in 'real world' shots ;)

I came from a D90 also and I know people like to justify their purchase but that can sometimes blind you to the truth and the truth is, the D7000 isn't a huge step up unless you want the ability to shoot at expanded ISO's.

I'm the first to admit disappointment when it's present, but in this case I was pleasantly surprised. I don't spend my time reading reviews, what little free time I have I spend out with my camera, and I maintain that noise is handled significantly better. I don't have time to engage in the usual cyclic arguments you seem to specialise in, and if you want to snidely suggest that my perception is skewed by some kind of post-purchase cognitive dissonance, you just go ahead fella.

No need to get silly...

Just pointing out for the ops benefit that actually, there isn't a huge difference in ISO. If you said you thought it shot at 9fps I'd also reply with the fact that it's 6 because 9 would obviously be incorrect.

If you ever get tempted to exchange it for some of the queens finest, give me shout. I'm currently spending hours comparing 17-5x f2.8's for my d7000......seems none are really perfect though.

Cheers, but hanging on just now, but got a serious hankering for a 24-70, so it may be on classifieds soon. You better get your post count up to get access :LOL:
 
i know what you mean about DX lenses. i bought a brand new 17-55 last june & only used it on 2 weekends away.........then bought a D3 & some more suitable lenses :bonk:
mines not been out since then either :bonk:
 
I've just plumped for a D600 - totally overkill but I got a new job and wanted a new toy that would last me for a long time. If I haven't sold my D90 by the time the D600 arrives I'm probably going to do a few comparisons for my own sake!

Annoyingly, I had to create a new account as my last one was attached to a work account and I left that job 6 years ago. I may hold back on buying new until I have classifieds access, I keep seeing threads of people upgrading from the kit I'm after! :-(
