Been using my Pentax now for the best part of 4-5 years now managing with just the kit lens and a sigma 70-300.

Its still going strong and still takes a reasonable shot. I mainly use it for the usual Holidays/Birthdays etc 'family' type stuff. Along with the ocasional bit of urban exploration and motorsports.

Next year me and the wife are going on our honeymoon for our first anniversary (vagus and the west coast fly and drive) so thats one excuse to get a new camera. Plus i really have found the limits on my pentax and want to get back into photography again.

Ill keep the Pentax for the more hardcore urban exploration like mines, shafts, drains etc.

  • Budget is anything up to £1500
  • Looking to buy in the new year looking for a deal
  • Not worried about sticking with Pentax
  • I also enjoy shooting and editing video so good HD shooting is a must

The natural option would be the Pentax k-5, and it does look like a really good body with the excellent build quality you get from pentax being a huge plus. But its not exactly the best spec out there atm the video shooting is limited.

I have used briefly my friends Canon 7D which took good shots effortlessly but i didn't fall in love with it by any means :thinking:

Nikon not really looked into these yet?

The one that really stands out from the crowd for me at the min is the Sony A77 SLT. It seams to tick all the boxes for me? I have heard a few roomers regarding early production issues but i suspect they are just that. I like the idea of being a little different rather than using a Canikon?

Whats your advice people?

Looks like you are doing the best thing and beginning to try different models out.

When you say you have reached the limit of your current body - how ? What would you like the new body to do that yours couldn't, what size / weight of body do you want - if you can narrow this down it may help narrow your choice some.

An example from myself I went from a 300D (still have and is still good) to a 40D as I wanted a bigger body and a higher fps.

On spec, the mew Sony bodies look very interesting, my FIL shoots with Minolta & Sony A700 and really likes the Sony body.

Hope this is of help ...
 
Oh and do you want to blow all your budget on a new body, if you change makes, then you'll need some for new lenses as well

I want HD video, higher resolution, faster fps, longer exposure (limited to 30 secs atm) generally more scope to experiment and take better photos.

Good point about body to lens budget. Thats one of the things i need to think about spend less on the body and get a couple to lenses or a more expensive body and stick with the kit lens till i can afford to add a lens???

IF i did go for the Sony the 16-50 2.8 kit lens looks like it would keep me happy till i saved up for something maybe longer to complement it?

Oh yes and it never stops :-)

Then there will be what other lens should I get, what bag should I get, do I need this, do I want that etc etc

A friend has recently purchased a 60D and is delighted with it, high fps, high resolution, bulb exposure, articulated screen which he loves.

Sorry - the first and last parts of that post simply do not fit together. :D

In answer to the original question, ask yourself what your current gear does not do as well as you would like. Once you get that sorted, you will find it easier to choose. I started off with and still use Pentax, but the AF was simply not up to Aircraft and Bird photography. That's why I bought Canon.
 
sigma 10-20 pentax mount? pentax 12-24?

Was going to suggest a tokina 11-16... but they don't seem to do pentax mount for it :/

Should give you nice wide scenes whilst in vegas...


For movies, well either a smaller point n shoot or dedicated video camera around 400-600ukp ?


Just thoughts, so bear them in mind?
 
Since you're used to Pentax, I'd look long and hard at the K-5. By all accounts it's a very good camera with one of the best APS-C sensors around.
 
Yup, k5 is an excellent camera. Alternatively, since you're still using pretty standard glass, get a k7 from your budget and spend the balance on new lenses - the k7 is still a lovely camera, and it sounds like you might be limited by cheap zooms a bit.
