What Nikon DX lens?

Ive been asked by a client what the best lens is for his Nikon 5100 that he can use as a macro lens and for portraits.

I've had a look at what's available and it looks to me like the best bet is the Nikon 85mm f3.5 G ED AF-S VR DX Micro Nikkor.

Any one got any other ideas?

Thanks :)

Yup. I would never advise going for a purely Dx lens unless size and weight were an absolute priority and even then I would suggest "manning up"! There's always the possibility that a user will upgrade to FF in the future and any Dx lenses will need to be upgraded at the same time (unless the user's happy to compromise and shoot in vastly reduced resolution).

With the 5100, he's stuck with needing AF-S lenses if he wants to keep AF, otherwise I'd throw the Tamron 90mm and Sigma 105mm macros into the ring too but the MIL/VR versions of them approach the cost of the Nikkor.

have a look at Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. But it will not autofocus on D5100. will work on FF bodies perfectly. great quality. fun to use in manual mode too.
