I was planning to get a cheapish 2nd hand nikon dslr for.my son so he can learn slr photography however what older dslr can I get that I can get a selection of lenses for that will also fit the newer nikon bodies so if he gets on with it then I just need to buy a new body not body and lens

A second hand d90 would be a fab buy.

The D200 is a good body if you want to go second hand yet still get decent quality. It works with far more lenses (eg AF-D, AI-S & AI) than the very basic entry level second hand bodies which is worth bearing in mind.

Try the D80....capable camera and pretty cheap....poss a couple of hundred quid..

I would agree with getting a D80. My first Nikon. Cracking little camera.

Tim - have a look at a large used dealer like MPB or Ffordes and see what fits in your price range. Everything the guys have suggested so far are great cameras, and add in that for around £500 you could get something like a D2X if your lad doesn't need ultra-high (1600+) ISOs....

The D80 is a surprisingly capable camera for the money. There's a fella in my work who uses one for wedding and portraits and gets some great results.

Cheap first Nikon body? MPB have loads of cheap D40/D60 and D3000 bodies, however my choice, if they get one in, would be a D50, it has the in-body motor, is a nice wee camera to use and I've seen them on their website for around the £100 mark and a decent one is never going to be worth much less than that when you come to upgrade.
