I already own the canon 24-105 but need something better for blured background. My choices are between the 17-55 or 24-70

what would you choose? :thinking:
 
On the crop sensor body, such as the 450d, the 17-55 is a more 'normal' walkaround. However, which you will prefer is up to your shooting style.

Have you considered a prime? eg do you have the nifty fifty or the 50 f/1.4 for even better bokeh?
 
Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM is pretty good and not too harsh on the bank (about £200 cheaper than the Canon 17-55), or as suggested a nifty fifty or 85mm.

Of the two you suggest the 17-55 may be a better option as it gives you a little more range but is not full frame compatible if you ever end up getting one of them, although I've not used either so don't go off my recommendation.
 
Just bear in mind that if you have lenses that overlap in range your gonna spend time wondering, should I be using this one or that one for this photo?
 
You'd have to be pretty far back on a crop using a 50mm, but I'm sure its possible. I just did a quick google search and found this discussion on flickr which may be of some use.
 
usually, on a crop 17-55 makes more sense. But in the end, it depends on your shooting. If you think 24mm is wide enough, you can always go with 24-70mm.

50mm might be a bit long on a crop for group shots, especially indoors where you can't really back away. Another option is the sigma 30mm f1.4.
 
50/85mm f/1.8 may be good starting points for really throwing the background oof. The f/1.4 versions if you have the cash to spare....

If you're limiting yourself to those two lenses then I don't think you're going to be "wowed" by the increased "blurr". By inference, your chosen requirement is between 24mm and 55mm and a one stop increase in aperture at the wide end won't give a spectacular change in the OOF region.
My advise would be to look at both Canon and Sigma's prime offerings between 30mm and 50mm, specifically EF35/1.4, EF50/1.4, Sigma 30/1.4 and 50/1.4.

You've already got the focal range covered, so you might be better off going for a fast prime. You can pick up a 50mm 1.8 VERY cheaply second hand, if you're not sure about going down that route. Supposedly the Sigma 30mm is very good, too, and it equates to a standard FOV on a crop sensor.
 
Sigma 30mm f/1.4. If blurred backgrounds are your thing.. works out as a standard length prime on a crop sensor. A very nice lens.
 
On a crop you may be better off with a 35mm f1.4 for group shots, although they can be a little costly depending on what make you prefer. I've just got a nifty and they can be a tad too long for groups or indoors, but they are a hell of a lens for the price.
